Default Disappointed with my weight loss

Hi, I'm just over 3 weeks post op (lap gastric bypass) and everything has been going fine. I eat 3 tiny meals a day, have not felt hungry, have plenty of energy, started exercising a week ago etc. BUT, although I lost 6 kilos the first week (thats about 13 pounds), since then I have struggled to lose a kilo (2 lbs) a week. Everyone says you lose masses at the beginning and I am becoming very disappointed. I mean I know it is best to lose slowly in the long term so as not to lose too much muscle mass but I can't understand why it isn't falling off given that I am consuming so little.
Has anyone else had this problem?

PS - is it my imagination or do they kick you guys in the US out of hospital pretty damn quick? Here in Switzerland I was in for 5 days and they considered that short and only let me go because I had been doing so well.

I was in the hospital for 4 days but I had the open procedure. Everybody loses at a different rate. Don't get discouraged yet! I am going to give you the words of wisdom that Bridget gave me when I was feeling down about hitting a plateau-STAY OFF THE SCALE!!!!! Don't weigh yourself everyday. You are probably losing inches (centimeters?) right now so you are getting smaller, just not losing the kilos(?) right now. You will start losing again!!!

I started out at 253 and I too have been losing 2 lbs a week. I am dissapointed with that but I think it is because I started out a "lightweight" as my Dr. says. I am 5 weeks post op. I had open RNY and was in the hospital for 4 days. I really could have used another day!!!!

i was in the hospital 2 days.. lol

Dont worry about your weightloss so early out. We all lose at different paces, and note that you are under 300 pounds so your weightloss will be slower than that of someone more than 300 pounds!

keep your eyes on what YOU are doing. Do not measure your success and failures by what other people are doing. You are losing and thats the goal, the rate at which you lose you can do nothing about. Just stick to the rules set forth by your surgeon and your results will be awesome! Keep up the great work, and welocme to the board!

It's good to hear someone else has the same 'disappointing' weight loss Mary, I know I should stay off the scales but it's just too tempting. 4 days in hosp after open surgery and 2 days after lap - they are monsters over there! I mean I felt like I was ready to leave after 4 days but they wanted to monitor me after I started eating and although everything went fine it was nice to know that they were keeping an eye on me. Having said that though, now that I am out of hospital, its like my doctor has totally lost interest in me, I don't even have a follow up appointment!

Question Diet Recommendations

Carla:

We talked on another thread about what you've been able to eat so far. It sounds as though your surgeon is much more liberal with food recommendations than ours. We are placed on very restrictive diets in the beginning and encouraged to eat primarily protein. We are also encouraged to change our eating habits to insure permanent weight loss and improved health. This may be why you are noting that we seem to lose weight at a faster pace.

However, you should definitely follow your surgeon's recommendations. You will most likely continue to lose weight and inches. Like others have recommended, you should measure your body to see how many inches you are losing. It can be a very encouraging tool when the pounds are not dropping fast enough for you.

Good luck!

I had open and was in for less than 2 days. I begged my doctor to let me stay another day he said no. When I got home I was not ready at all for the pain and inability to function. I WAS very upset about it.

Slow weight loss. I was 242 when I started so my weight was and is very slow. This was a big one i lost 3 this week. Some weeks nothing and some 2-4 depending on how much protein I ate or water I drank and how much exercise I did.

But I was very control freak in the beginning about my weight loss. Now I am ok with it. I am just happy that i had the surgery now at 242 than wait until I am at 300.

Keep up the great job at lossing weight. Slow is better than too fast. You are lossing just right.....

Default slow and steady wins the race, they say

I was in for 5 days and had open. My MD let me stay an extra day because I had no one to help me before that.

I've shed rather rapidly because I have a lot to shed. But for a couple of weeks I didn't and panicked. BUT, I still lost inches. I also cut out bread for a week and lost 4 pounds.

I have such a love-hate relationship with my scale. It is another addiction to avoid.

Default You are not alone.....

I am 6 1/2 weeks post op and 3 of those weeks have been no-weightloss weeks (zip, zero, none). It is definitely discouraging but I found that for two of those weeks, I was not eating all of the protein that I needed.

The frustrating part is the last two weeks were the ones that I have been sticking to a workout program, eating the protein and still no weight lost. I have been fortunate, though, that my total weight loss for the 4 weeks that I lost weight was great. I've been weighing myself daily and will try not to weigh myself for the next week until my follow up appt on Tuesday of next week.

Try taking measurements each week...you would be surprised how much your body is changing even when the scale stays the same.

I lost at 2 lbs/week and am now under goal. Doesn't seem so slow to me.
