Post Sleep problem

My surgery was 6/8/05, open RNY, and my sleep patterns have gone crazy. I am easily fatigued, so at times sleep during the day. Have gone back to my treadmill, get exhausted, sleep. When I feel a burst of energy, I tend to push it, clean pantries or something, and then crash.
I have no pain at all, not even in bed, or rolling over, so it is not pain that is keeping me awake.

Anyone else experience difficulty w/ sleep?

Colleen

Colleen,

Ok so you are 3 weeks out and you had open surgery. I will tell you what Dr. Potts told me and I quote. "Hello, we just got done rearranging the inside of you, you need to take it easy, it will take a while to heal."

I am like you, I wanted to be back to normal ASAP. But the reality is, it will take a while. I just now moped my floor. I am 5 months out. (yes I have been sweeping it and doing touch of cleaning) but I really couldn't do it before. IT was too hard on my incision line.

So take it slow. They just got done rearranging the inside of you and it will take a while to get back to normal. Relax more, rest more, drink more and enjoy more. The rest of the stuff is not going any were. Your pantry will still be there 2 months from now.

Love ya hope you start feeling normal soon. Trust me you will feel better each day. Just give it some time.

Thanks, Barbara! I really have been 'pushing the envelop' trying to do well, lose wt, etc. I need to chill.

You are doing great 23lbs in less than a month. That is fantastic. slow and easy. Your in this for the long haul not a short sprint. Pace yourself.

Any suggestions from the group on difficulties with sleep after surgery?

Arrow Quite Normal

Colleen:

What you've described sounds pretty typical for a person who has just had major surgery.

I felt so good at about two weeks after surgery, I commented to a coworker, "I can't imagine taking another four weeks off work. I feel great enough to go back to work." Luckily, I analyzed the situation before running back to work. When I tried to stay up all day long one day, I was totally exhausted! Boy, did I backpedal with my comments!

I realized that during the day, I had a bed nearby and would lay down and nap whenever I felt fatigued. My sleep patterns had also become disrupted. I was napping during the day and staying up late at night. It was sort of like when you were in junior high school on summer vacation.

You've just gone through a very physically traumatic event. Give your body a chance to recover. Believe it or not, there's a good reason why most surgeons recommend you take six weeks off work after surgery. Hopefully, you have a support system in place so that you can relax and heal.

Try not to stress about it...relax. Good luck with your healing. Welcome to the other side.
