Default mindless eating...

I was cutting up a banana for my daughter and without thinking popped a piece in my mouth and started to swallow it before I realized what I was doing. I freaked out a little because I had no intentions of eating it. It was just what I'd "normally" do. I've had to really pay attention when I'm making meals for my family that I don't sample or taste like I'm used to doing. This is such a huge learning curve for me.

Kay,

You're so newly post-op that you haven't yet adjusted to your new way of life. But the fact that you are AWARE of what you did is a great sign! Just know that with this surgery...it's sometimes a learning curve. Some days you'll do great food/exercise wise and the next time you've "screwed-up".

Old habits are HARD to get rid of...but you can do it!!

You can not unlearn eating habits that you've developed over many years in a few weeks or months. Making mistakes is part of the learning process.

My biggest issue was chewing my food. This was a particular problem with foods that I REALLY liked as my many years of pigging out had me inhaling it. I made myself sick many many times before I finally got it.

Bananas make me dump bad...that would be a tragic mistake for me.

I think what shocked me the most was how involuntary the act was. It was like breathing or sleeping, it just happened. It's no wonder I'm fat. Who knows how many thousands of calories I've consumed over the years without thinking first. I guess this is just part of the learning process, but wow!

that totally happened to me on my pre-op diet... I was getting my holiday baking done so I could get everything mailed out before I went into the hospital, and as I was making my various cookie doughs, I kept going to lick the random bits of batter that managed to get on my hands or whatever just because it's so much faster than grabbing a paper towel, but it's a really hard habit to break out of

KAy how I can understand you. Despite the fact that I am over 15 months post-op, I started again to have this habit, until I understand and if it is too fatty or has sugar I spit it out. Unfortunately it is a drastic change in habits: at the beginning is it not too difficult as you cannot eat a lot and everything, but once over this stage, bad habits are coming back. I fight with that....daily

Oh my, I had that habit too. I'm a cook who cooks without recipes most of the time... so I taste test, and taste test. It used to be that by the time dinner was one, I wasn't very hungry. Of course not, I ate WHILE I was cooking. OK, so I ate dinner anyway.

Although I'm very conscious about what I put in my mouth now, I slipped when I was frosting a chocolate cake last Christmas. Yep, I licked the frosting off the spatula before washing it. One lick! What made me ever more mortified was that I didn't dump, or had no reaction to that lick whatsoever. OK, maybe more would have done it, but heck, I side effects.

But it's a habit I always had and now I find it gross. Yes, a good thing... but sometimes we do things so matter-of-factly that the act is over before it registers that we did a taboo.

The good thing is that you noticed and will work diligently to keep you hands with food away from your face while preparing. So far, so good for me, with one 'known' slip, I'm sure it will get better for you, as well.

My mindless eating was something I was made aware of pre-surgery. I'd probably eat just as much preparing dinner as I actually consumed off my plate.

Although not recommended for everyone, it was suggested that I chew sugar free gum when preparing food (just be careful not to swallow it).

It worked for me and it's still something I do.
