Exclamation Don't Fret

You're not even one week post-op. Don't worry so much about getting in your protein. You should concentrate on sipping as much water as possible. At this point, it is important to your well-being to be properly hydrated and to take your vitamins. You will have plenty of opportunity to get adjusted to a protein drink (or whatever form of protein you choose). The reason you may not be tolerating the drinks is because it might be too early for your body. Remember, you've just had MAJOR surgery on your stomach and intestines. You are correct--they are VERY sensitive. They've been sliced and diced, so it is better to be very gentle with them. I would suggest that you sip your water, take your vitamins and try to walk. You're gonna be just fine. Just RELAX.

Default Depends on your doc...

I started on soft foods (yogurt & cream soups) at two weeks post op, then to puree's at 4 weeks post op. I have noticed, though, that each surgeon/program is different where some can have soft foods as early as 1 wk post op. Check with your doc at your follow up appt.

I have had a hard time with the isopure but have not found one that is any easier. I don't have a sensitive pouch but have sensitive tastebuds and am sensitive to smells. If it smells too sweet or funky, I can't even try tasting it. Isn't it wierd how we are now? I did pick up some Any Whey unflavored protein and added it to my cottage cheese this morning but think I added too much because the stuff was too dry to eat, so I added milk which made it too runny. I ended up throwing it out before tasting a bite. If I come across a good way to use it, I'll let you know.

I have a couple of things of protein I'm trying to get my husband to drink because he can use the protein too (and he can add chocolate syrup or something to mask the flavor).

Along with what Dara and Bridget said, it is really difficult to get the protein in the first week or two. It will come with time and once you are able to eat food again, you won't have to rely on the supplements as much (I am only getting about half of my protein from shakes and the rest from food.)

I haven't been through the surgery yet, but my dietician will have me drinking Carnation instant breakfast during the 1st week. That may be more palatable for you????

Keep the faith!

I never could tolerate the protein. I have been drinking 2% milk since very early out. Dara is right, at this point, your most important task is to sip, sip, sip. Hydration is your everything right now, and walking, you are still at risk for embolism, so keep walking. You will get your protein later. There is protein in powdered milk also, and I added it to my husbands fluids last month for his spinal surgery.

Instant breakfast is good too, but it does have calories. The protein is in the milk. I think a packet of instant breakfast is like 3 grams of protein. Don't quote me. But 2% milk is 10 grams of protein to one cup. Milk also has calcium, and it is a fluid.

Good luck to you.

Welcone home. Just remember why you did it and try putting up pictures of things you would like to wear or do. I am new to this and I hope that am able to get through the hard part. Not eating what others eat. I haven't had the surgery yet but today they through me a grandma baby shower. My daughter-in-law and son are having a girl. It was hard not having a hugh helping but I have been watching my food intake to prepare for this and had maybe 1 cup of food. GOod luck to you.

I had the same problem with having gas each time I drank water. I hated that. My dr gave me the ok for GasX at my one week check up and that helped a ton.

You're getting good advice from everyone. Keep sipping. I froze my protein drink and then let it melt in my mouth. I also put it into 1 ounce cups so it didn't feel so daunting. I drink Pro Complex (bought on line) and mix the chocolate with raspberry crystal light. I love it. It takes me all morning to drink it.
