Default vegetable and fruit supplements?

It is hard to get enough servings of fruits and vegetables. Has anyone ever heard of or tried fruit & vegetable supplements(pills)? My friend who had gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago takes them but she buys them from her father who is quite the shuckster so it's hard to trust that they work as he says! Especially whether they would be absorbed enough in our shortened tract to make much of a difference. Obviously they aren't to be a substitute for real food but any info would help! Thanks

From my research, the pills contain such a small amount of processed veggies that you'd have to eat them by the bucket-load to get any benefit. Save your money.

Quote:
Dehydrated vegetable pills contain such a small amount of processed vegetables that they could never replace eating real food and getting five servings of fruits and vegetables is so easy that any reasonable person should be able to meet that requirement.

Vegetables contain thousands of phytochemicals that prevent diseases such as cancer and arteriosclerosis. Some are already known and many are still unknown, For example, peppers contain capsaicin, citrus fruits contain coumarins, berries, peppers, carrots, tomatoes contain flavinoids and tomatoes and fruits contain lycopenes. The volume of one pill is so small that it is unreasonable to expect it to contain the phytochemicals found in vegetables that are many thousands of times its size. Scientists can't even extract many different phytochemicals. The only way that you can get, available phytochemicals is by eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. No pill contains large amounts of phytochemicals.
I've tried powdered vegetable and fruit supplements - this is a couple Green Foods Magma Plus Powder -- 11 oz - www.Vitacost.com - Greens Today Reds Complete -- 8.80 oz - www.Vitacost.com and I got to tell you, if my life depended on it - I couldn't get the stuff down - it is downright nasty.

Getting back to eating a reasonable quantity of fruit and veg takes time. As soon as I was cleared for veggies and salad stuff, I started with just a few baby spinach leaves with cottage cheese and the like. Just take it slowly.

Note to everyone about the jars/cans of baby food (the fruits) - check the labels carefully. Some of the sugar is on the high side.
