Default Food Hoarding....

Has anyone else done this. I can't part with left over food or extras. Prior to surgery I would have eaten everyting on my plate. But, now I find that I am more conscience about leaving food behind. I noticed this on our trip last week that my purse was ladden with food I could not leave behind. A half eaten bag of corn chips that we got on plane, the oyster crakers that came with my soup, the crakers that came at dinner. I can't leave it behind I have to carry it with me even though I know I cannot eat it.

My refrigerator is full of half eaten food no matter the quantity I can't leave it behind. I can not walk away from a half eaten plate. I can't leave it on the table I have to stuff it in my purse or carry it away as take away.

I have never done this before. Before I would devoure it. Now I am having difficulties leaving it behind. My fear is that as I am further out and can eat more that I will fall back to the stashes and hoards of half eaten food. My obsession of taking it with me or not leaving it on the plate will allow my weight issues to return.

Why can't I just leave it behind? There is nothing wrong with a half eaten plate of food. It is driving me nuts.

It's a new habit to have to learn. When you are "deprived" of food, it's quite natural to want to stock up for the rainy day. Similar to the thought of not wanting to waste it or getting more food for the price. It'll take a conscience effort, but after a few weeks, its should become natural to leave it behind.

I used to bring home food thinking, cool, I don't have to cook for a few days. I found out early that I generally don't want to eat the same thing for 3-4 meals in a row. Then it's just getting moldy in the fridge. Either way, excess food is to waste or to waist.

I think (my opinion) that your are having separation anxiety, you seem to be having a hard time letting it go. It will take a while for your brain to catch up to your body.

My trouble is, is that I hord food in my house. Usually you can not get one thing in my refrig or one thing my two freezers or one thing my cabinets. Yesterday I cleaned them all out. Wouln't you know it with in hours I was at the store restocking it. Ok so I needed milk. but that was pretty much all i needed, I did not need 100 dollars in grocerys. Help I am a food horder and have been since I was dirt poor for so many years.

There are tons of reasons why we hoard food. My neighbors all know they can call me for just about anything and I will have it. I have a walk in pantry that is always full. PLus a chest freezer. If I see I'm down to 4 boxes of cereal, I rush to the store for more. I have four lazy susans in there, two cans high, filled to the brim. COSTCO is my best friend! I don't know why I do it either. But I'm okay with it. I mean if that big quake hits us, I'll have enough food for everyone! When it comes to left overs, I give them away. Again my neighbors seem to like my cooking, so I make tons of salsa, and give everyone some. If I make bread, or cookies, or anything like that, everyone gets some. ANy left over dinners, either go to the dog, or I make my husband eat it for lunch. After two days, if it's still in there, I force myself to throw it away. I think my fear of moldy food, surpasses my desire to save it! LOL

GOOD NEWS!!!

Food Hoarders can overcome!!!

I know 'cause I r one!!!

I learned because I had no choice. Like you!! There is no way we can eat the food we used to. There are many times going out to eat is just not as fun and all I get out of it is another foam box. I try to share at the restaurant, rather than order a whole meal, or order the ever famous soup and salad meal. Skip the bread and drink and I can usually finish. or come close enough.

Throwing away food, has become a way for me. I was at work and had to throw away some food. The reaction of my co-workers made me think the end of the world was aproaching, untill I explained that in my old life, (the fat one) eating all that food was a waste also, because it was more than what my body ever needed. They calmed down and all was right in the world!!

You can do it!!

You will find ways to order and find people/ family members to give the food to. or...yes...you can throw it away!!!

I use to do that too, you will grow tired of it. Now I just leave it... 'cuz I know Im not going to re-heat and eat. Now I just toss it. If ya think about it, your holding onto food with little or no nutritional value... thats not wasting, just toss it! It gets easier with time.

Well, Melanie, I for one have to say that I do the exact same thing! Right now, I have four to-go containers at home in the fridge with some really awesome food in them! Some of them are my own leftovers and some are others... I can't leave them behind either. I hate to pay for an entire meal and leave 3/4 of it on the table. I do eat some of it later, and some of it goes in the trash. I wonder if I'll ever change, but after reading these replies, maybe I will!

I do try to share food instead of buying a whole meal, but when I take my kids out, they really don't like to give up any of their food! Ah, to be 11 & 15 again with a ravenous appetite! No! Can't go back there!

Hang in there, Mel... we'll get through this together!

Glad I'm not the only one who has penicillin growing on my left overs. Thanks to all who posted here, I am committed to cleaning the toxic waste out of my fridge-and starting with a brand new outlook.
