The average age is 51, so some will go earlier and some will go later. Also, peri-menopause will start to affect many women 10 to 15 years prior to menopause.
I'm 48 (well, 49 really) and I've had serious hot flashes the last couple of months.. but I've had symptoms of peri-menopause for a while now, particularly the excess facial hair.

I have been skipping periods for about 9 years. I had surgery for fibroids in Aug 2001. Doctor said that should take care of it... NOPE... I just recently got my period (12/16) after 6 months (even my surgery did not jump start it). And I have had hot flashes since 2000. Since my surgery the hot flashes seem to be reduced. (that seemed strange to me) and facial hair SUCKS!
While every women is different, I believe that there are many factors that contributes to when we start the "change". For example, when we start our periods, when we have children, etc. I am 47 & I believe that I am in peri-menopause. I had my last child at 21 years old (tubes tied at 22) and even at my highest weight (340) I still had my period right on schedule every 28 days.
So Gina, you could be starting peri-menopause. Your OBGYN should have a blood test that will determine if you are.
