Default Food Getting Stuck

Warning -- some of this post is gross. But I'd like some input or advice.

I'm only one week post-op and I'm supposed to be on liquids only but OK, I had two bites of spaghetti. They got stuck. I had this terrible feeling in my stomach that something was stuck and wouldn't move.

I vomited several times, and a couple of times I dry heaved. Some of the spaghetti came up but something was still stuck.

It took about an 1.5 hours for the feeling to go away.

What can I do in the future if I get this stuck feeling?

I wasn't allowed to eat spaghetti that soon out. You just had surgery on June 7th? We were not allowed to have any doughy food such as bread or pasta until way further out. That is probably why it didn't go well with you. Stick to cream soups, low sugar/ carb yogurt or refried beans. Oh, that is scary. At least you got the noodles out.

Jared,

Oh my!!

Why did you eat sgetti??

I think at the early phase you are in you need to stick to liquids.

FYI, our doc's have us pretty much on liquids for the first 10 days. Which includes sugar free jello and s/f popsicles, broth and not much more than that. Then you can intrduce cremed soups and if all goes well aroound 2-3 weeks you can have mushy and crispy foods, meaning mashed potatos, refried beans along with crackers. Do not confuse crispy with crunchy ie: carrots.

Around 4-5 weeks you can add other stuff, but you should really consult your Doc.

Sorry you had that bad experience. You have been seriously rerouted and need to be careful!!

Good Luck!

Two bites! It was two bites!

Well, I learned my lesson.

I wasn't specifically warned away from doughy food but I admit that I'm supposed to be only on liquids for two weeks and then only on soft foods like cottage cheese for another two weeks.

But does anyone have tips for what to do if -- even following the rules -- something gets stuck?

If you follow the rules, nothing should get stuck.

They have you graduate to foods for a very specific reason. I guess you just learned it the hard way.

If something does feel or is stuck the only course is to ride it out. Something that I've heard to help is walking it off/down.

I asked my surgeon this question and he said that if a piece of something got stuck in the stoma that sometimes a swig of carbonated pop (although we are not supposed to have this) will "pop" it out.

Someone in my support group said we can take a couple of Papaya Enzyme pills. It is supposed to help break the food up so it goes down. You just chew them up and they don't taste bad. She says she carries them everywhere with her just in case.

But I agree with everyone else, you need to stay with the liquids and move to the next levels as you are able to tolerate, which means usually following your docs. advice.

Hope this helps.

Only two bites??

My surgeon shared with us the story of a patient he lost.

A lady who was bound and determined to eat that Wendy's Frosty.

She sat on the toilet suffering with dumping syndrome but that wasn't the end of it. She continued to shovel that creamy, frozen treat into her mouth as she sat and pooped.

Remember the symptoms of dumping syndrome....

* Rapid heart rate
* Sweating or clammy feeling.
* Diarrhea
* Nausea
* Faint feeling or light headedness.
* Abdominal pain or cramping.

Her heart gave out and she died right there on the crapper.

Can you imagine being found dead from a heart attack.....Your breeches down around your ankles and melted chocolate ice cream strewed around....Not a pretty sight!

You're a very, VERY bad boy!!
