Hi Katrina...
It should NOT hurt to drink water... please do yourself a favor and call your surgeon's office to let them know about this. DO NOT WAIT until your 4 week check up (or whatever schedule they have you on)... Water is essential to your recovery - and if you're having problems, it could be signs of a stricture or other complication.
Let us know what happens!

I agree. Call your doc! Check and see if it's normal!
I do have to say that water used to give me a lot of discomfort in the beginning, partly because I would drink it to fast. Try to add some flavor to it. Crystal Light was a huge help for me to get past that rough spot with water. Now it's not an issue for me.

Same here, call the Doc. you might trying drinking room temp water. My wife had a problem with cold water, but could do other things cold with no problems at all. It is funny how everyone is so different even though we all had the same surgery. But please do call, you need those fluids. Good Luck

i think i might know what you mean. drinking water for me in the 1st 3 wks was so hard. it didnt necessarily hurt BUT it made me sick and i actually cramped up a little and got these twinges and gurgles all over in my stomach when i drank it.
i started drinking more broth, at least 2 8z cups a day, and sugar free hot cocoa. once i was able to start getting the required liquids in, then water started getting easier to drink. i still cant drink it alot, i drink more tea, cocoa, and crystal light then anything

Heyy Kmaggs! I agree with you...drinking water in the beginning was tough. I just had no desire to. It didn't hurt...it was just so boring. I couldn't really do cold water. I stuck with room-temperature, or the hotbroths. Those seemed to work best.
Good luck to you. If the intolerance to water continues, call you Dr ASAP!

I would call the surgeon if its hurting you to drink!! I felt sick when i drank water for the 1st 5 weeks and i was told (by people on TT) to drink room temperature water and that did help alot and also try mixing the water with a sugar free cordial or something it may help!

Is it the temperature of the water that's causing you a problem?
For what it's worth, I still can't handle plain water and certainly - never anything that's cold.
Early out, was tea was my drink of choice. And peppermint or chamomile tea helped settle the tummy too.

Straight water? No way.
I still can't handle much straight water. Makes me nauseated.
I add zero calorie drink mixes. You're early out - try some crystal lite or something. Changes the PH just enough to make it easier on the pouch.
Tea is the same idea - just changes the ph enough. I'm over 2 years out and I tell ya, I can drink it if I have to, but no 64 oz a day, thats for sure.
As for food, I started on mush at about 3 weeks. Fat free refried beans were my first and ricotta cheese. Then on to canned tuna and salmon, though after a month I couldnt eat those anymore either.
I hated food for a few months. It takes a while. ALways start with one bite on a new food and wait. I mean wait like, 10 minutes. Then try another. Do not eat ANYTHING reheated in the microwave - too dry. I learned that the hard way.
Meat is usually the hardest thing to get back onto. I still have to be careful with chicken - again, anything dry doesn't work. Thank heaven for salsa.
