Default Blood Sugar post-op

Before the surgery my BS was 115-120 before breakfast. I have not measured it post-op until today (5 months post-op, 80+lb down). It was 104, which was a little higher then I hoped.

Would you mind sharing how was your blood sugar after surgery?
Thanks,
Tonya

I am only 6 weeks post op and yes mine is about the same as yours in the morning. But this is with out meds. I have stopped the diabetic meds since I left the hospital. So for me to be this low with out meds is unbelievble. I took it right now to see where I was and I am 94 @ 9:35 pm. Are you still taking your meds?

Hi Carrie,

I was never on medications. I probably would be now if not for WLS.

I guess I should watch my sugar for a few days and see how it will progress.

um.. 104 is in the normal range still? I did the testing for a long time and everything seemed to have an effect - exercise increased my fasting bg - particularly strenuous exercise.. not eating enough did too.. so even "right" things can screw with bg...

I am not a nurse - just another (in remission) diabetic... someone with more knowledge will surely respond.. but still.. 115-120 is borderline and 104 is not bad at all (at least according to the standards I used back then)

drinking more water may help, eating a small protein later in the evening may help... other than that I'll let other more knowledgable people check in

also.. after surgery my bg went wayyy up (over 300 which they said was due to the surgery.. go figure) but then dropped and dropped until I was off all meds... now when I take it it's never over 110 and usually between 87 and 105 but I don't take it very often anymore

My BS is a little haywire now. I used to be fine pre Op, but I get peaks and troughs now. I use a meter that gives me percentages (apparently the correct range is 4.5% to 7% mmol) Mornings I am fine at 5.5% ish, but some days I peak at 12% a few hours after eating, then other days a few hours after eating I will get a huge trough of 2.5%. Having kept food diaries and BS diaries, there is no discernable pattern at the moment, other than I feel tired and warm before it comes on.

My Doctor is filling me full of holes and running tests, but nothing conclusive. It is a little frustrating, as I want to apply for a job on the railways when I leave the army, but if I keep having these BS problems, I can forget any safety critical job.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Thank you all for your reply!

Somehow it is stuck in my head that blood sugar should not be above 95. I know that 105 is not bad at all, and I am very greatful that I never had to go on medication (thanks to my WLS). However with all the excersize and strict diet I was expecting a lower number.

I am going to get a appointment with my endocrinologist (might take a while). I will pass all the information I will get alone to TT family.

Cheers,
Tonya

As your body shrinks, your pancreas will likely become more efficient. When I've lost weight before, when I got in the 180-pound range, I didn't have to take meds anymore. Sadly, that was awhile ago, and I won't be there for a long time.
