IMO, they're never going to be the "same" again.

I hope to God that someone says they eventually regain some normalcy.

Mine are loose, soft, chalky (i think this is due to the gallbladder which is coming out on monday) and stink to high heaven (embarassingly so all the time).

Some have no problem - some have the opposite problem - some (like me) required big-time help.

If you're having even a whisper of a problem, go get something now cause constipation has a habit of getting worse very quickly.

Milk of Magnesia is effective but my preference was Miralax (bit more expensive but no cramping etc). Benefiber added to your drinks helps get a routine going too.

In the meantime, fluids are the best thing you can do for yourself. Did I mention fluids???

What do you mean by "normal"? Do you mean how soon after surgery will you go at all? Or do you mean when will you be "regular"? I went 5 days after surgery, I think. After a few weeks of it being too much one way or the other, I'm now totally "normal". No difference from pre-op except smaller. (trying to not be graphic, but hard to avoid it) That said, I have far fewer food issues than most people, it seems. I haven't thrown up once and I can eat anything that isn't fried and doesn't have sugar. I don't consume caffeine at all (haven't in 8 years). Maybe since I eat normal food (rather than mostly protein shakes and other liquids) that influences it. I do have a protein shake once a day maybe 5 days out of 7 and add some Benefiber to it.

I only occasionally have a protein shake as I've not really found one I like much... I eat yogurt with live cultures, drink 80+ ounces of non-caffeinated beverages, take probotics, a daily stool softener, and still need to take a laxative at least once a week to go... I haven't been 'regular' since surgery.

For a comparison.. pre-op, I lived with immodium in my purse, my desk at work and in my car.. and needed help keeping diarrhea at bay ever since my gallbladder was removed back in 1981. Now, I just hope for a pain-free BM, which rarely happens anymore.

Mine weren't solid until about 4-5 weeks post-op. Now I'm 2 months and 1 week out exactly and constipation is my issue. It's painful. I typically only go twice per week, and that's with help.

I had problems until I was around 5-6 months out and started increasing my good carbs (vegetables, fruit, wholegrains).

I didn't have the same BM ever again. After surgery, I became one of the "constipated" wlsers. I sometimes go days without a BM. I do remember the first BMs were runny and watery and that was the last of it.
