how much is too much? (continued)
Hey Guys & Gals,
I just came from the nutrition clinic at the hospital I had my wls. When I told them how much I could eat at 3 wks out they all just about flipped out. They said that there is no way that I should be able to eat that much food. They said that I should still be eating no more then 1-2 medicine cups full and it should be done over a 30 minute period. They want me to go back to eating like that and they said pureed food only. My doc. told me soft foods (I can skip the puree). They said in order to be successful I should follow the nutrition clinics guidelines and not the docs. Remember, right now at 3 wks out I can eat 1/2 cup of food in a 20 min sitting. I am so confused now, I don't know what to do. I try to eat 5-6 times per day, drink as much water as I can, take all of my supplements, and I work out every day religously. Am I really doing something that is going to hinder my success with this surgery?

My Gosh Tracy! I'd be just as confused as you are. I hope you find the answers you need. Maybe it's somewhere in between these two sides.

Bottom line is how do you feel about it? Is it too much for you? Guidelines are guidelines. What's your weight loss? How's the body fat count? What are the numbers telling you? Do you stop eating when you feel full? Do you even feel full? It's easier to eat more when the food is soft and moist. It is digested more quickly than when you eat more solid foods. You take little bits of information and tailor it to what works for you.

I agree that it probably lies somewhere between the doc an the nutrionist. Personally, I always go with the doc.

Marie,
I don't know how I feel about it. I try not to eat no more than 1/2 cup of food at a time, 5-6 times per day. So far I have lost 21 pounds in 3 wks. I don't know what my bmi is because I haven't had it checked lately, plus I am working my butt off at Curves EVERYDAY. I don't stop when I feel full, I stop at 1/2 cup of food period (usually not that full feeling, but content). So far I have had no food issues. Everything stays down and no dumping. Here is a sample of my daily eating schedule:
break: 8 oz protein shake - drink w/i 1 hr.
am snack: yogurt
lunch: 1/2 cup cottage cheese w/tuna or 1-2 slices of lean ham or turkey
pm snack: 4 oz V-8 juice
dinner: usually approx. 2 oz whatever meat everyone else is having (except beef), then fill up the rest with well cooked veggies.
eve. snack: fruit smoothie, some kind of melon, or sometimes nothing.
Before I had this surgery I would only eat 1 - 2 meals a day and a snack in the evening. So the way I eat not is a huge difference from the way I ate 3 wks ago. Plus I am working out now and I never did that before surgery.
I really don't know what to do. I feel like I am eating & working out now the way I should have been my whole life, and that is why I am losing weight, not because I had the surgery. But when I went to the support group at the nutrition clinic they made me feel like such a stupid idiot, there is no way I should be eating this much food so soon after wls.
I honestly don't feel like what I am doing is wrong, I feel like this is what I should have been doing my whole life. I am so damn frustrated and confused now.

I haven't yet had the surgery so I can't really help you with the facts, but I firmly agree with the rule "listen to your body". If you feel good and you feel like things are working for you the way your are eating I say continue, just make sure you always listen to your body. In my personal experience I know that if I would have listened to my body years ago when it kept telling me that it was full and couldn't hold anymore I wouldn't be this big. I used to eat even when I was full just for the taste or the emotional comfort, or so I thought. This is just my opinion and I wish you the best of luck finding out what is right for you. Oh yeah... I think 21 lbs in 3 weeks (21 days) is great. Congrats.

Pouch
Tracy:
From what you've posted, my only concern would be that something went amiss with your pouch. Immediately after surgery, your pouch is supposed to be smaller than a golf ball. If you can eat 1/2 cup of food at three weeks post-op, it may be because something is wrong with your pouch size. Depending on how your surgeon chose to create your pouch, you might have a staple line leak. If you're concerned, I would suggest checking with your surgeon to rule out a complication. You don't want to get too far down the road and find out your pouch has been compromised.
Good luck with your journey.

Have to go with Dara
on this one. THat much at three weeks is a bit much and if it were me my concern would be that my pouch were compromised. I'd fein being ill and have pictures taken CAT MRI ... Are you feeling sick with anything you eat? Are you feeling painfully full?

Hi Tracy
I am 5 weeks out and was able to eat about the amount 1/2c that you could. Now, I can't. I started thinking I had a stricture or something because over the past week I have felt too stuffed after I eat and things don't go down as easily. I have finally decided I am eating too much too fast. Your post helped put amounts into perspective for me what I should expect my serving sizes to be.
Today I went back to soft foods and small portions (1/4 c) and feel a lot better. Maybe it is the healing of my stoma or something.

I agree with Dara as well. I'll be 7 weeks out on Friday, at the most I can only get 5 ounces of fluid in at time - don't think I could even manage 1/2 cup of solid food.
