Default Bored with Food!!!!

Ok, y'all might think I'm nuts, but aren't we all...just a little???? LOL

First of all, I "just" noticed that you all are in California? I'm on the opposite coast in Virginia. This is a big "DUH" moment for me! And, I've been intruding! I was searching one day and found this site and thought it was wonderful. Thanks for letting me trespass!
I had open RNY on May 26, and as of yesterday, I've lost 39 lbs. I went to my family reunion last weekend, where, of course, there is tons of food. We camped out for the entire weekend. I came prepared with protein shakes, bottled water, yogurt, crackers, etc. Crackers seem to be my "friend", but I'm concerned that they have too many carbs...what do y'all think? Anyway, at the reunion, I ate 2 bites of a hot dog (no bread) and it stayed down well, and about 2 tortilla chips. My cousin made a blueberry pie with Splenda, so I sampled that and it all stayed down well. I found that I can eat several bites of a plain, homemade cheeseburger (no bread). I tried a Boca Burger last night and had to hurl it up...YUK. I can do refried beans with cheese on it, but (this is embarassing) I am having some trouble with being constipated UGH. I'm getting bored with finding things to eat. I generally eat a cup of yogurt everyday, and drink a cup or 2 of skim milk per day. I'm afraid of getting sick, so I feel like I'm avoiding a lot of things. What about pasta??? Can I try it now, or should I wait? I don't eat eggs, so that's out. I haven't tried chicken or turkey yet.
Also, I've been making a protein shake with powdered soy protein, skim milk, a cup of yogurt, and ice cubes. I noticed that after I drink it, I don't feel very well. I wondered if between the milk and yogurt that there might be just a tad too much sugar in it???
What else is there to eat other than yogurt, crackers, beans and hamburger????
Please let me know if I'm still allowed to post on here since I'm not on the west coast.
Thanks!
Tabitha

Smile Hello Tabitha!

I am glad you found us, please stay we will support you. Right now you are in the soft foods stage. It doesnt last long, I cant believe you are able to digest hambuger already. Other suggestions are tuna fish, imitation crab flakes, I use to do RyKrisp crackers with cream cheese. Think soft proteins right now..... I wish i could be more of a help! I am glad you are here though! I look forward to hearing from you again. Best wishes!

No problem if you're not local. We are all in the same boat. Welcome, welcome.

Watch the air content of your drinks. Too much air when mixing can make you feel a bit sick. Also dairy can be rough for most people, so you may need to substitute some non-dairy products.

Did your surgeon have a dietary guideline to follow? Dr. Callery here is very thorough and I know that not all surgeons are as on top of things as his office. I have seen a variety of dietary timelines and it varies widely. My rule of thumb is if you chew well and eat slowly, you should be able to tolerate more variety.

When trying something new, I take just a few bites and wait and see what happens. Everyone is different on how they will progress through the post-op experience. I'm a bit fortunate that I've been able to tolerate duck, chicken, pork, and raw leafy greens a bit earlier than some others.

It's all a big experiment. It can change from moment to moment. Hang in there and keep reading.

Default Hi Tabitha!

I had lap on 1/30/04. I am still experimenting with food. What works one day for me won't the next. I have to take one bite and wait ten minutes to see if it is ok. Then I finish if it stays down. I can not tolerate dairy (milk, yogurt or real cheese) by any means. I can eat cottage cheese though. Go figure! So, try cottage cheese, I like chicken in a can (it is like tuna) and fish. I also like sea food. Shrimp, salmon, and crab. Hope this helps.

Tabitha,
I feel your pain! Some days I can tolerate solid foods and others I stick to protien drinks. I am about a week ahead of you and I couldn't think about hot dogs, but I have become quite fond of BBQ chicken. The BBQ sauce is by Carb Solutions and has zero sugars. Another suggestion would be to try the Carb Solutions yogurt. It doesn't have the sugar in it the other brands have. And of coure the fish that Tracy recommended is wonderful! Good Luck.

Hi Tabitha,

I too am from Virginia and bored with food. I just had my surgery on June 25 and have a long way to go. I have been looking on the internet for some sights hoping they have some food suggestions. One thing I have tried are smoothies made with splenda and protein powder. They taste good and stay down. Good Luck!

Default I am bored too!!!

Tabitha,

WELCOME! I had my surgery 06/02/04 and I have lost 40 pounds! However, like you I am bored with food already! Well I am bored with what I have been able to eat. I am having a hard time with meat at all. This BUMS me out. I have been making a WONDERFUL protein drinks that has 50 gm of prtein in it. It is called NET Zero Carb Isopure (vanilla) and I add 6 oz. of soy milk (vanilla) a cap full of Vanilla Extract and 2 sugar free chocolate sandich cookies and blend! Yummy...Cookies and Cream protein shake! It gets me my protein in for the day while I try solid foods. Hope this helps.

Tabitha,
First of all you are not intruding. You are more than welcome here. Second of all it is not constipation. We are eating less so our colon has less work to do, ergo we have less bowl movements. I also thought I was constipated but Kelly our RN told me it was because of less food. she said up your water, walk and take a stool softner if you need one.
Good Luck
