Not the same car, but the same problem. I have a Toyota Yaris Hatchback. Everytime I got in, I felt like Respusha from Norbit!!! Now that I have lost 56lbs. my car has begun to get bigger! I never even thought of the butt, I thought it was the stomach!LOL

Laura, I feel your pain! I'm 6'0" and find that I no longer have my seat all the way back in the Suburban, and I slant the seat differently now too. We also just bought a Saturn Astra - small 4 door hatchback - and I love it - there is absolutely no way I would have been able to drive it 50+ pounds ago. I used to always put the seat all the way back in all cars and in the Saturn, I can barely reach the pedals if I do.

All things considered, isn't it a wonderful problem to have!?

I notice it on airplanes. My knees used to dig into the seat in front or me painfully. They still hit the seat in front, but since my spine is closer to the seatback, I gained some space for my knees and it is no longer painful.

So... yes... reduced butt and back fat will move you further away from the pedals. Hey! Your first "wow moment"!!! Congrats!

Not only do I sit farther back, but I sit lower in the seat, too....LOL

Laura, thank you for this thread! Here's my little "wow" moment in the same vein:

I used to drive a Cadillac and now have a well-used Dodge Ram pick-up that I got six years ago. I'm very attached to my truck, but would really love something newer, smaller, and less fuel-hungry, but still with good headroom and cargo space. In the last year or so, I've developed a near-obsession with the Honda Element. Yes, I know, they're strange-looking boxes on wheels and I used to hate them, too, but they've really grown on me. A number of my friends have them, including a retired Navy officer who travels on long road trips, a lawyer with two kids who wanted a fun family-mobile, and an artist who owns a gallery and who wanted a hip way to transport his big encaustic paintings and other pieces to his gallery, all happily using their Elements for very different purposes and LOVING them.

So, given my developing obsession, my lawyer friend offered to let me test drive her Element when we met for lunch last winter, when I was still pre-op. I was devastated at the result: the headroom was fine, but my knees were smashed against the dashboard. Even with the seat all the way back, there was no way I could even move my legs at all, much less operate the pedals. I regretfully took the boxcar off of my wish list.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, I was pulling into the parking lot at work and saw a court interpreter I know getting out of his lovely Atomic Blue (my preferred color) Element. I thought "He's pretty tall and has fairly long legs - how on earth can he drive that scrunchy thing?" So I asked him, and he said "Well, the headroom is great - you can drive wearing a top hat if you want - but the leg room isn't much, so I have to put the seat all the way back. You could probably fit fine. Why don't you try sitting in my driver's seat?"

So I did. And, of course, in keeping with this thread's theme, the massive reduction of a$$ fat since surgery actually allowed me to sit in the driver's seat and operate the pedals without a problem. No, I didn't have a lot of knee clearance, but I had enough, and there's more clearance to come -I'm still over 100 pounds from my surgeon's goal and have plenty of a$$ fat left to lose. An Element will be just fine, thank you, whenever I feel like taking on a car payment again - maybe in 2009. Yeee haw!

Well, I haven't had the surgery yet, but I have lost 115lbs. on my own, and before I lost the weight I would have to have the seat all the way back and the seat reclined to fit in behind the wheel. Fortunately I have longer legs, so I could still reach the petals. However, I had to put so much of my weight on the steering wheel that I actually broke two steering wheels. Fortunately now there is enough room for me to have the seat straight up, and there is a space between me and the steering wheel. I could move the seat up if my legs weren't long, and , needless to say, I haven't broken any more steering wheels. The trials of moving away from morbid obesity.
