Default Vitamins-How much? What kind?

What should we be looking for in our vitamins and iron?

Here is a list that my nutritionist recently provided me. It has a list of all of the vitamins we should be taking. Check your multi-vitamins, calcium and iron. Are you getting the right amounts and in the right form?

Vitamin Requirement List

I found out I wasn't taking all that I should. Some of my vitamins were the wrong amounts, some were the wrong forms.

Look at it yourself. You may be surprised to see that you aren't getting in all that you should. I certainly was.

Here is the same list but it also includes recommended amounts if you have deficiences.

Vitamin List with Deficiency Information

Beth - this has to be one of the most informative articles I've read on this forum.

Not only does it list the amounts we should be taking but equally important, what form these supplements should be in!

Thank you.

Oh you're welcome, Corrine. I finally figured out how to get it on here. *L* Took me awhile but my tenacious nature served me well.

Yep, I was pretty impressed with it too when my nutritionist sent it to me hot off the presses. *L* She was showing it to me before she even had it approved by Dr Baker! Brave lady. *L* I was glad when she gave me her and the dear doctor's blessing to share it with the forum.

You know I sat down with my own vitamins and even though I am taking what I feel is a good bariatric vitamin there were still a couple of the vitamins that were in the wrong form.

Deborah, specifically on the Building Blocks Multi-Vitamin? It was the Vitamin E. It was the "dl" not the "d" kind.

There wasn't enough Vitamin C, B-12 or Magnesium.

Looking at the Celebrate vitamins there are a couple that don't quite fit the amounts but they are closer. The ones that are off are the Vitamin C and Phosphorus. But it has more Vitamin C than the Building Blocks.

Basicly nose to nose they are pretty close to each other. The up side of the Celebrate in my mind is that they are cheaper plus they have more B-12 so that you won't have to supplement with additional B-12 unless you are showing a deficiency.

I do plan on adding in a 500mg Vit. C though, to take along with my iron to help with the absorption of the iron.

Thanks Beth, that is good info.

One thing the first list does not say, if that is to be a daily intake, or?

my pills do not measure up to all that is listed, but I do take the vitamins 2 times a day, I need to double check that what my vitamins list is either per dose, or as recommended for 2 times a day.

I too need to add Vitamin C and Iron, one thing I was not told to take, but I will add it see if it gets rid of some of my dizzy spells.

Yes, chiquita. The amounts are per day. For most multi vitamins you will need to take 2 pills daily to get the right amounts. On the bariatric vitamins that I take the label gives me the amounts for a daily dose, which is two tabs. One in the morning and one at night.

With the iron make sure you aren't taking it with dairy products or with your calcium. Also you will want to check your multi-vitamin. If it has calcium citrate in with it you can't take your iron with your multi-vitamin either.
