Do any of you look in the mirror and see the same person you were before surgery?

I've kept track of weekly weights from day one. If you look at only a week or at a month's glance, it seemed so level and slow. When I look at the graph for the past year, it's a huge and obvious downhill thing. There was a "platuea" here an there, but the big picture shows progress and success!

Debbie: awesome post! Totally awesome.

Rhonda: Its funny, sometimes I look in the mirror and I think wow, look how thin I am, but when I am sitting down in shorts, swim suit or underwear all I can think is how fat I am. Last night I did that. I was in this little cami and shorts set (PJ's) and all I saw was all the skin laying around me... thighs, legs, upper abdomen.... all I could think of was hot "fat" I am... all this while wearing size 6 PJ's. Its still weird, checking those glimpses and giving yourself a reality check. In public I still get anxious when I need to go through a turnstile or sit in a booth ... Im not sure how long it will take to get over all this. Im sure, as they say, time heals all wounds!

Bridget - Thanks so much.

Rhonda - still see 321lbs of me most of the time. Now though I am starting to catch the true reflection. I dont know who that person is. Take pictures of yourself and look at them. Its amazing how we see ourselves compared to how others see us. Mirror will tell half truths but the camera never lies.

Talking

Bottom line.... Each person was designed specifically different. We didn't all get fat by eating the same kinds of food for the same reasons. Nor did we all gain weight at the same velocity. Fact is..... you will lose weight after WLS. Maybe not at first, maybe not rapidly. Some people lose it quickly some people feel like it's burning slower then Geroge Hamilton on a beach. ANY loss is a wonderful thing!!! I'm suppossed to lose a good 10 pounds this month. PFFFT!!! At least we have THIS place. This wonderful freeing place where we can say anything and just feel such freedom to be ourselves. To revel in each others successes, to support each other in a time of need, and to just be free. Have you noticed how many other things besides WLS we talk about here?? How lucky we are to have this place and each other. With all our differences and all of our sameness!!!!

I'm guilty of the scale thing... it's hard not to compare numbers especially when we're early out and barely eating... my brain is saying "okay, you are barely staying alive, how are you not losing weight". I know it's irrational. But when I look at my weekly log it's been kind of steady... the thing that killed me was I lost a big chunk of my total loss during the first week... so seeing a pound here and there is distressing. I'm getting better though - not so concerned anymore... but thanks you guys for posting the reassurances.

The scale is enough to drive someone nuts...I record my weight every Monday and leave it at that...it is very depressing going up and down on the scale.

Default everyone

I can totally relate, I have to admit that I was actually the one that Bridget wrote this post about, but I know alot of us feel the same way. So I think she was really just trying to show us that we are not alone in feeling like this. So thank you Bridget.
Honestly Bridget, Jeanie, and Angela are probably sick of hearing me cry about how slow my weight loss has been the last few weeks. At first I was losing it so quickly but now it seems like 1 or 2 pounds a week. Bridget actually did take my scale and I only get to weigh myself when she allows me to. lol
anyway, it makes me feel so much better knowing that this is all normal.
See you at support group!

i think that everyone should throw away the scales and invest in tape measures. i have lost 3 lbs already in just being excited to be going to my consult on may 17 2005 how ever i have lost atleast 4 inches because all winter i was wearing size 46-48 now size 44 shorts i had from a while back are falling off me i cant wait for this surgery and if the scale say i weigh more than before so be it as long as the "tale of the tape" shrinks ill be a happy boy.
i will post my "official stats after tuesday
Eric
