Default FRUITS and Other Stuff

How soon after WLS were you were able to start eating fruits, nuts etc? I know I could probably find out on my own, but I had dumping once and I swore ONCE was enough for me. I am craving figs with a little touch of gorgonzola. Not a lot just a small taste. The cheese is OK, no problems with that, as a matter of fact every cheese I have had has been problem free. It is the fruit I am worried about. Aren't fruits filled with sugar? Also what about nuts? Since the WLS I have been pretty much off of all breads, pasta, rice, risotto, sugar, pretty much any thing that has NO protien in it. Funny thing is that I do not crave any of it either. Except for the risotto. But anyway what are some of the "carb food" that you were comfortable with. I have read people started eating mashed potatoes, oatmeal after WLS. Is this possible w/o getting sick? Any info from y'all would help....thanks John

I still have trouble with many of the fruits. When I eat fruit, I get hungry, so I try to limit my fruit. I still can't eat oranges...they make me dump. I have been eating cream of wheat with splenda since the early stages and it has always been good to me. As for other carbs, I am learning they go right through me and don't keep me full.....I try to stick with protein and snack on nuts.

Default Hey John,

My problem with carbs is that if I eat flour based carbs, I'm hungry about an hour later. Fruit, like strawberries, is very high in sugar, so I can eat very few. I love watermellon, but it's basically water and just goes right through me. I still love it. Veggies that I love - brocolli, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, sweet potatoes, yams, potatoes, and green beans. Just be sure to try different things, in the privacy of your own home, to see what works best for you. Always check the carb count.

I always try to keep my protein numbers ahead of my carbs in everything I eat. It doesn't work all the time, but I'm still learning too. Let us know what works for you!

Best of luck!

I eat pears once in a while and about once a week I indulge in about 6 grapes. No more no less. I don't know about figs though. The only way to find out is to try it and see what happens. I'm ten weeks out!

I ate oatmeal right after surgery and have done fine with it since. Yes, we have to concentrate on protein, but it's not a good idea to withhold any one food group. The body needs nutrients from all sorts of foods. Complex carbs are fine, such as oatmeal, whole grains, etc. Just see what your body will tolerate. Steer clear of sugar.

I'm trying to get my protein in... it's hard right now. I'm a picky eater regardless. Saltines are my treat... 1 or 2.

I read Kim's post about watermelon - it sounded so good I bought my son a huge tray of it... just tried a couple tiny slivers... and it's not sitting too well at all. Probably stupid on my part, but it just sounded so tasty!!!
