Default Why is Bread bad for you again...?

I know I am not supose to eat bread and don't get me wrong, I haven't had any. But for the life of me, I can not remember why? Can anyone tell me what is so bad about bread? Can I never have it again or am I supose to wait a certain period of time before eating it. My husband says it's because it expands in your stomach again once you swallow it. Is this true?

Thanks for the input.

For me it turns into paste...
Sticks to the pouch & gives a bad feeling...

Your husband is right. Things like bread, rice, pasta...they all expand in your pouch so that it doesn't leave much room for the protein that you need. Many of us couldn't even tolerate those foods early post-op. It took me a good year to be able to do bread without feeling like there was a rock in my pouch. At 2 years out I can tolerate some bread but I really don't eat much of it. Often it is still uncomfortable. It kind of depends on the day.

The other thing is, is that bread is a carb. Some people will find that eating carbs is a real trigger for them. You will just have to find what works for you.

Default Milady is completely right

I'd say the same thing she did.

I'll add this. Take a piece of bread and put it in a bowl. Throw in some water, don't need a lot, just about what the saliva amount would be if you were to eat it. Watch what it turns into. Gummed up blob of BLOCKAGE. No good. Stuck in the gut, gonna barf it up, just not what your body can handle. It EXPANDS too.

And going off bread/rice/pasta for a couple years postop was the best choice I made. I hardly eat them now and don't ever crave them. Carbs are the lowest item on the food pyramid you should be eating, with or without bypass.

Hope this helps ya remember the why of not eating the stuff.

I personally do not have a problem with bread...but as stated before me...it can trigger a not too pleasant dumping session and should only come after you've fulfilled your protein requirements.

My NUT actually encouraged me to get a few more carbs in my diet...but there are a lot of good carbs that aren't necessarily bread. I have found though that if I am really craving the taste of bread, I will eat half a slice of whole grain bread TOASTED with peanut butter on it. It takes a long, loooooonnnngggg time to eat but really hits the spot for me.

I can live without it though. I use it more as a "treat". Makes me feel more "normal"...whatever the heck that means!

cheers...the mums

Bread that is toasted is not as bad as fresh bread...so I've heard. I've had a little crispy bread, but none fresh.

I have never had a problem with bread, I try to eat flax/wholegrain for my first choices for rice/pasta/bread although white goes in fine too. Everyone is different and you have to test your pouch to see what you can tolerate. I admit I had it easy and can eat anything so my willpower has to govern my intake more than my pouch. The main thing is get your protein in B4 eating the carbs, you won't want so many then...

I enjoy well toasted garlic bread every now and then...but just the end cap and I am stuffed.

Rice has never been an issue for me either..I eat sushi every weekend.

Go figure!
