Default Daughter 6 weeks post op blockage?

My daughter ate some type of mashed potato today, along with meds etc... and has had a blockage ever since and has been vomiting a lot and also water was not going down. Finally got down a few ounces and is now vomiting it all up. Talked to doctor and said if it doesn't clear to call back again.

Also her esophagus hurts, throat etc... which I assume is normal?

Any tips, I freak out every time there's a problem and don't want to over react but after 6 weeks out it just seems like she's still eating very little and this blocked her right up. Anyway advice would be appreciated, thanks brandyII

Uhmm....is she crushing her meds?

If so and she is still getting blocked then she needs to be extremely careful and make sure to call the doctor back if she continues to throw up.

Is she taking all her prescribed meds as well? Like the ones they sent her home with?

I didn't take my carafate and it only facilitated the vomitting.

Does she have popcicles? Those and jello? That will help to keep her hydrated.

I am sorry but a doct. is really the only one who can be of more help. I know there is a med. to help stop vomitting but some doctors don't like to give it to their patients. It has to be prescribed by a doct. too.

Thanks Monica,

She has 4 capsules that she can't crush and, two are from the surgeon for gallstones and ulcers, and two are antidepressants. I think she ate the potatoes around 7 hours ago. At this point getting anything liquid is difficult but I'll suggest the popcicle to her, thanks. She just vomited up all the water she drank and so I'm going to check back with with again, she's 19 so I'm still "mom" you know and can't help but worry. I'm lapbanded and it's a totally different thing, never had the problems she had and even if I did vomit I don't worry as much because it's not as hard on me as I think it is on her.

Anyway thanks for the response I appreciate it brandyII.

Hmm...I was told by my surgeon to pull apart the capsuls and dump them in my water or juice. At least for the first 6-8 weeks.

I would not let her go through the night vomitting, maybe even the E.R. cause we are barely eating anything we become dehydrated that much faster and finding a vein at that point can be really hard ya know?

Trust me I know. At 2 weeks I did it too and every 10 minutes I was vomitting. By the time I got to the E.R. I was serverely dehydrated and they could barely find a vein. I ended up staying a night and had many many bags of fluids infused into me.

I hope she feels better and please keep an eye on her. If she starts to sound 'strange' like incoherent or sleepy get her to the E.R. and make sure to tell them she is a bariatric patient if it's not the hospital her surgeon practices at.

Yeah, none surgery related, though. The darn clot was from the IV> But it's 95% better!
