Low Blood Sugar
Okay, something's going on here...
Every once in awhile, I get real shaky and start getting a "buzzed" feeling...but not the good kind of buzzed feeling. It just happened again and my wife suggested I take a blood sugar reading. It was 35!
Does anybody else have any experience with low blood sugar episodes, and what do you do about them?
-Mike

When I was at the hospital for the 4th, I had the same problem and they gave me 2 iv bags with sugar and 1 with sodium. Natural fruits are your best bet to raise your sugar level when you are like that. Oranges are really good. You may want to try that, then test your level again. This was actually my second time with this as the first time I had passed out, and days later my sugar was still low.

Honey, 35 is WAY too low! Your glucose level should be 80-120. You may be suffering from hypoglycemia (without suffering from hyperglycemia). You need to tell your doc asap.
Did you suffer from diabetes prior to RNY?
Also, to raise your glucose quickly, drink orange juice or milk. Or you can buy sugar tabs at the drug store. BUT...please tell your doc.

My surgeon told me that I CANNOT take those steps to raise my BG levels, post surgery as they can cause dumping. I was told I had to be very careful not to let those numbers go that low. Now, 5+ months later, I don't remember what they told me to do though.
I googled "low blood sugar after gastric bypass" and tons of links popped up.. Mike.. this is a serious issue and you really should be contacting someone.. my surgeon has given me the diabetic care hotline for Brigham & Woman's hospital but I was diabetic before my surgery.. if you weren't, you might not have that kind of information for your local diabetic care hotline.

Yeah, I took Metformin twice a day for diabetes pre-op. My blood sugar resolved within a month, but the doc kept me on the Metformin through December, when I had issues with low blood sugar and migraines. After that, I didn't have any blood sugar issues until maybe a couple of months ago, well, I'm assuming that they've all been low blood sugar episodes as they were exactly what like what just happened a while ago. Only tonight was the first time I thought to test it.
I had a couple sips of OJ and some popcorn, and feel much better. I'm drinking a little milk now too just in case.
I had been reading on the forum about people feeling funny in relation to dehydration and thought maybe that's what it was...I've only been getting in around 64 oz, which I know is on par with what we should have, but I normally get in between 80-100 ounces of fluids a day...
I'm going to leave the glucometer out and check it several times a day for a few days and see what happens. If this doesn't resolve, I WILL go to the doctor.
I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this and what they did about it.
-Mike
PS. Just so you know, even though I was shaky and becoming buzzed...I was able to maintain my comic streak and asked my wife if she remembered that scene in Steel Magnolias when Julia Roberts got too much insulin in her and messed up her hair. My wife said, "Why, do you want a cookie?" I said, "No, honey, juice is better--cooperate please."
I think I said something about not talking about me like I'm not here, but I don't have any hair to mess up so the effect was kind of lost. I guess that's why Julia's an actor and I'm not.
I got my own juice.

LOLOL Well, take care of yourself, hon! I don't want you to end up like Julia Roberts where she's shaking in the salon chair and her mom is spilling OJ all over her. You don't wanna mess your hair up! We'll have to send Dolly Parton over your house then!

All hell would break loose if Dolly came over. My parents listened to her albums when I was growing up and I still listen to them! My wife thinks she's hokey but I tell her--there's TWO BIG reasons I like Dolly--her wonderful voice and her enormous talent. (I know what you were thinking though...)
Off-Topic...we watched this documentary about Dolly Parton fans on one of the cable channels one afternoon...I'm not THAT big of a fan--those people were scary. I wasn't sure of the angle of the documentary, I could see a little comedy, but I thought it was really sad for the most part--some of these people had no lives except following Dolly around. If it's on again, and I don't remember the name of it, you have to watch it...it was fascinating.

I actually had hypoglycemic issues pre op (without diabetes), when I get that shaky-dizzy-headachey-faint feeling I get myself to the fridge and I make myself eat something. I don't know that it matters so much what you eat/drink as opposed to making sure that you do eat/drink something. You know? I now keep a fresh pre-mixed fruit salad (red grapes, red lion nectarines, and fuji apples) in the fridge at all times so that it's ready if I ever need it in a hurry. Good luck Fish!

But, if you're able to drink milk or OJ normally which the RNY, it'd be okay to raise your BG. I know I have no problem with milk, but I haven't tried OJ.
