What makes you/made you dump?
I'm only one week post op, but I was just curious as I know the time will come. I know that 15+ grams of sugar is a big no-no. I'm wondering about the non-obvious items that made you dump, i.e. liquid Tylenol. So, what have some of you "dumped" on?
Or, if you've never dumped, how far out of surgery are you?
Thanks!

I don't think I've dumped yet.. I *thought* I had one night, even posted about it, but I've since found out that I wasn't dumping, but I had something stuck.. it's gross when it gets stuck and you get the foamies and blech...
I'm 5 months post op as of yesterday.. I've had occasional bites of things that many people say cause them to dump without issue.. however, other than the pizza that Duckie thumped my head over.. nothing has been more than a small bite, maybe two so I guess I'm not getting tons of the bad stuff to cause dumping.

I am almost 3 months post op and I have yet to dump. I don't want to experience it so I watch pretty closely sugar content ect. I know like fruit and stuff can make a person dump and I have tried some fruits in very small amounts. like 2 bites or something like that.
now I am sure there is a time where I will but if I can prevent it I will. It just scares me and well I just don't want to do it...LOL

I've only dumped once, on Liquid Tylenol. My surgeon that is pretty unusual. It wasn't a full blown dump, it was just confusion, exhaustion, nausea.

Ok, I'm the weird one here. I don't usually dump on sugar...it makes me a little light headed feeling but not what I would call dumping but I dump on high fat. Had some ground beef once and it must have had more fat in it than I thought. We were camping and I ended up curled up in the hammock feeling like death warmed over. Not a good feeling and not one I really wanted again.

I dont know if it was "dumping"....but one time I had a couple too many small bites of chocolate cake...I cant remember all my symptoms, but I do recall being sick - I remember feeling like CRAP and having dry heaves
Yesterday I had a cup of those chocolate rice krispies, whatever they are called....it made me have diahrrea (sp) almost immediatly, and for hours afterwards. I'm not sure if it was dumping, but it effected me for a loooong time.
Other than that, I dont eat, except for the occasional toddler meal...so I dont have that worry LOL

I am 11 weeks post-op and haven't dumped on anything, only the occasional stuck food.

Before I go into the dumping part, I feel I have to say this, my doctor did not give me a specific diet to follow, just said eat as tolerated. So for me the dumping was pretty much trial and error.
I also have to say that IMO, we are hyper sensitive to sugars and fats immediately after surgery. I seem to be more tolerant as time goes on, but the RNY still ocassionaly slaps my hand if I eat too much of the wrong stuff.
Now with that being said, the first time I dumped was about a month out of surgery. We were camping it was August and so very hot. My husband at the time thought it would be a great idea to get an icecream. I had one of those Snicker Ice Cream Bars, and yes I ate the whole thing. What a mistake that was, heart racing, head pounding, felt like I was going to throw up, diarreha later, knocked me out for about and hour and a half, etc. Lesson learned, everything in moderation.
Now I do not condone eatting things that you should not be eatting, so please just remember that I was not given a do's and don't's list or a specific diet. I remember pasta from lean cusine made me dump and caused clogging, anything deep fried ie. fish, I still have to be very carefull with that kind of stuff. I've pretty much learned my limits, and all I can say is IF you feel you absoultly had to have something try just a bite, and try to make healthier choices. What I mean is instead of the icecream oh say like praline pecan, or moose tracks that's just loaded with tons of stuff opt for blue bunnie or other stuff like frozen yogurt. Then measure out like two bites and call it good. If your succeptable to dumping and you eat the wrong things you will learn your limits.
You asked about non obvious things that make you dump. Well maybe these are pretty obvious, but, Splenda and I don't get along, most cereals, I can do the oatmeal though, syrup and pancakes, (found a sugar free syrup), still don't do pancakes, french toast or waffles much, maybe twice a year. Catailina dressing, wooh have to be very carefull with that one, it's my favorite though so I really try to limit how much I put on my salad, oh yeah, coffee creamer (found a sugar free one now), absolutly can not do any of those capiccinos from the machines at the little stop and shops, gas 'n' go's.
Very obvious: I use to make cakes for all the guys at the shop for their birthday, again wooh, even just a bite when I was early out would make me dump. Lots of things, but I think I've said enough.
I sure hope you never do dump, but if you do, I think probably the best thing to do is just go lay down and try to rest and ride it out, it should pass in a half hour to a couple of hours. Please be very careful. It's truly not a fun experience to go through. Take care.
Sharon

I am 3 months post op and have never dumped. I stick to my drs food plan and I have only had popcorn which is not on his list. I am not sure that I understand people who are only weeks out eating chocolate cake.
As time goes on the current food does get a little boring but to take a chance on cake.

I was 11 months post op yesterday and have dumped once. It was in the last month and from about a third of a banana. It made me so sick I have sworn of bananas for the rest of my life.
