lala,

If you look at the comparison chart that Marella kindly provided http://www.dwdmedia.com/images/vitam...son-chart.html and then DOUBLE the amount shown on the ingredient list on your box of Centrums (cause you're taking two a day), you'll see that is isn't that bad a multivit. Marella lists Centrum Silver which isn't the one normally recommended unless someone has to avoid the iron, and it shows the amounts for 1 capsule and not the usual 2 that are recommended.

Centrum chewables aren't that bad as regular vitamins go. They were recommended to me by my hospital.

2 x Centrum chewables, 1,000mg B-12 sublingual), 1,500mg calcium citrate (with vit D).

But I also supplemented with a quality B-Complex as well.

Don't throw them out - finish what you've got but in the meantime, do some research on what you feel would be a better supplement for you. And talk with your doc/NUT about it.

For what it's worth, because of other issues, I take 2 regular, quality multi-vits. daily but supplement it with heavy doses of various vitamins and minerals. All recommended/approved by doc.

What a great chart! What about regular Centrum chewables (not the silver)?

Take a look at this chart... Centrum Chewables have been added.

Vitamin Comparison Chart 2

This also includes US/Canada RDI (all based on a 2,000 calorie diet intake), which means fellow WLS'ers... WE NEEEEEED MORE! Significantly!

Please take to heart what Josephine wrote:

If anyone wishes that I add more vitamin brands for comparison... let me know... and if you can, help me find the webpage source.

I agree, the comparison is a good source for NUT's and I told my NUT about my chart and she asked me for it, so I emailed it to her. After my last meeting with her (Tuesday), now more than ever, I feel like she's my partner in this (it's sometimes hard to deal with a super skinny NUT).

Dear Ms. Boomer...I would be quite pleased to share with you the schedule of my vitamin enhancement program.

I take the multi-vitamin at lunch with the iron and sub-lingual b-12.

I take another multi-vitamin at dinner with one or two calciums. (Or...I'll just take one calcium at supper and have the other later with a snack).

I always keep a small baggie of assorted vitamins in my purse just in case I am out and about. You know. Things to do, people to see, weight to lose.

cheers...have a spectacular weekend everyone. the mums

Default 9.5 months post opp

I am 9.5 months post opp and have taken Flinstone chewables 2x a day. All my blood test have been perfect on all levels (just had a complete panel ran last week) and Dr still supports the Flinstone's if I choose them.

Marella, looking over your chart I'm afraid the information for the Building Blocks vitamins is wrong. Everything should be HALF of what you have recorded there.

I just re-looked over my bottle of their multi-vitamins. It is kind of confusing until you look at the specific directions for taking them. A serving is 2 wafers/day. But you are to split that serving over 2 doses. You are to take 1 wafer in the morning and 1 wafer in the evening. So that is 2 wafers TOTAL for the day, not 4 wafers. The supplemental facts on the site and the bottle are for the entire days serving, not each individual serving.

Does that make any sense?

So this is what you are taking per day if you take the Building Blocks like they instruct.

Supplemental Facts
Serving Size (this is per day): 2 Wafers (1 wafer in the morning and 1 wafer in the evening)
Servings Per Container: 30

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marella,

I think you also need to review the figures for the Bariatric Advantage multi's too.

Their recommended dose is for 2 tablets/day and the ingredient list shown on their website is the total for the day. It looks as if you've doubled it too:

Quote:
Dose = 2 Tablets per day or as recommended

Vitamin A (from Beta Carotene) 7500 IU
Vitamin C 120 mg
Vitamin D3 200 IU
Vitamin E (as d-alpha Tocopheryl Acetate) 30 IU
Vitamin B1 (from Thiamine Mononitrate) 6 mg
Vitamin B2 (as Riboflavin) 3.4 mg
Niacinamide 50 mg
Vitamin B6 (from Pyridoxine HCI) 4 mg
Folic Acid 800 mcg
Vitamin B12 (as Cyanocobalamin) 100 mcg
Biotin USP/FCC 300 mcg
Pantothenic Acid (from Calcium D-Pantothenate) 10 mg
Calcium (from Calcium Citrate) 200 mg
Magnesium (from Magnesium Citrate) 50 mg
Zinc (from Zinc Citrate) 15 mg
Selenium (from L-Selenomethionine) 100 mcg
Copper (from Copper Citrate) 1 mg
Manganese (from Manganese Sulfate) 2 mg
Chromium (Chromium Picolinate NF) 100 mcg
Molybdenum (Sodium Molybdate) 75 mcg
Choline (Choline Bitartrate FCC) 2.03 mg
Citrus Fruit Peel Bioflavonoids 12.52 mg
Inositol USP/FCC 5 mg
Vanadium (from Vanadium Citrate) 25 mcg

Default Listen to Corrine and Marella!

I have to hand it to Corrine and Milady Beth (sorry I got the names confused on the title of my post) my bad...

Anyway, you've both educated this "old-timer." ESPECIALLY since I've just been doing what my surgeon said " tums for calcium and a regular multivitamin." Back in October, 2002 and before all the research on supplements for post WLS patients. BUT I have been eating a well-balanced diet since surgery and had no complications, so I was probably just fortunate. I've read enough here to know that many have problems when the proper vitamins (and protein!) are not taken by WLS patients.

I have never had bad bloodwork, but I figured it would be stupid to wait for bad bloodwork and then have to fix the problem. So I got proactive this week and got all my supplements and protein based on all the work done and posted by Corrine and Beth (and from PMs from Corrine-thank you!).

HERE'S WHAT I GOT, and I think it's affordable and covers all the bases (right ladies?)

GNC whey isolate protein (unflavored) 5 lbs. for $75 - 1 scoop serving

Costco's "Kirkland Signature Daily Multi vitamins & minerals" (label says "compare to centrum") 500 TABLETS for $11.69

Costco's "Kirkland Signature Calcium Citrate w/Vitamins D, K, Magnesium & Zinc 300 tablets for $10.69

sublingual B-12 (been taking that for awhile now) It's like $6 for many months' worth

I've been taking glucosamine/chondroitin too because of my long-term spine/joint/muscle issues. Costco had huge sized bottles for double the price of the vitamins above. I think glucosamine/chondroitin has been shown to be a very good supplement for ANYONE. I highly recommend this supplement for anyone that is or was morbidly obese. Obesity strains joints and the spine, and disorders arise down the road from carrying all that weight around, even if you don't have joint problems yet.

***Corrine, I couldn't find the B100 gelcaps you suggested, and I didn't see B100 listed on the Bcomplex bottle at Costco. You suggested B100, so I need clarification: is it sold separately or is it in the Bcomplex under a different name? And I'm wondering, don't I get enough of the B vitamins with taking both the multivitamin and sublingual B12? I'd really appreciate it if either of you ladies could clarify this one. I couldn't figure it out!

Again, many many thanks and this should definitely be a sticky thread! In pre-op AND post-op AND long-term.
