I am so glad I had this done and like you said it is a life changing surgery and I am gonna take care of my self , that is why I did this so I could be in better health , and I am now and loving every min. of it.

Wow you have done great, and Im sure you look fabulous. Im glad to hear that your levels are good. What works for some, doesn't always work for others. Its just important that we keep up our supplements, and don't get into a bad habit of not taking them. Congrats on you weight loss. Im still about 30 pounds from goal. Im not sure how I will react when I get on that scale in the new future and I have meet my goal. Im sure I will jump for joy.

I actually wrote the ASMBS, the organization that designates Centers of Excellence, and asked why they don't require doctors at COEs to provide patients with the vitamin recommendations put out by the ASMBS. Because wouldn't that just make sense? I mean, a COE should not be telling people to take Flintstones and Tums. It's been quite some time since I wrote them, though, and they have not responded. I guess maybe they're not going to. Which I just think is kinda rude.

Well, I'm glad someone else is writing, too. Maybe if they get enough letters they will pay attention. I was surprised not to hear anything back.

This is just my opinion, but why would you trust a doctor to dissect your insides, reroute your intestines and put you back together and not trust what he/she says about what kind of vitamins to take?

I know that my sleeve is different from the RNY because of the malabsorbtion factor, but damn the guy/girl went to school for 10-12 years, so I do my do diligence, but at some point you have to trust them. For my sleeve my doctor said 2 chewables a day for the first month and then a Centrum and some additional calcium until the 3 month bloodwork and then he will evaluate my individual needs. Sounds reasonable to me.

Well, the thing is, most surgeons don't get much education on nutrition when they go to medical school. They take one class in nutrition usually, during their third year, someone told me. They spend lots of time learning how to do surgery but not much time learning about nutrition. And I'm betting that one class didn't cover much about nutrition for WLS patients. And we know a lot more about nutrition for WLS patients than we knew ten years ago, which is when many of our docs went to medical school. And they don't always keep up on the latest info about nutrition.

I initially made the assumption my surgeon would give me good advice about vitamins. But I was told to take calcium carbonate, and then I read some stuff about how people don't absorb that well at all after RNY. So I decided I could not rely on my surgeon for nutritional advice. And then I hear things like people being told to take Flintstones, and it just indicates to me that you can't count on your surgeon to give good advice about vitamins. Not saying your surgeon in particular doesn't give good advice, yours might be fine. Just saying in general, we need to do some homework for ourselves and make sure the advice we're given measures up.

Default I read the whole thing...

Now where is my cookie?? Or vitamins in this case.

Seriously, I'm really glad I stuck it out and read the whole thing. Vitamin info and consumption has always been a weakness for me. Many of the questions I had where answered and backed up with research (awesome) as I read along. From chewable verses pill form, prenatal's, and what is the recommended dose of all. I am SO thankful that this is here.

THANK YOU ALL!!

I'll now be checking out the Celibate post.

(Might have gotten the name wrong, but if I did I know which one is meant.)
