I had to buy my vitamins pre-surgery and start taking them long before. So there were no post-op surprises for me.
I'm not a vitamin connoisseur but IMO, the Building Blocks taste just fine... to me, almost like a 'sweet tart' treat. I look forward to taking them (that's 2 vitamins a day and 4 calcium's a day)
I don't take a chewable Iron (I'm told they stain your teeth and after spending $500 on whitening, I'd like to keep 'em that way).
I had to get used to the taste of the B-12 sublingual, but even that is very tolerable and at two sprays a day, quite easy to deal with.
Considering that right now almost everything new I try to eat is making me nauseas and the vitamins settle well with me and are like a 6xa-day dessert, I can't complain too much. I'm having bloodwork done on Monday (just routine) so I'll see after then how I'm doing.

Marella, my nutritionist directed me to a new bariatric vitamin out there. I'm actually even more impressed with it than the Building Blocks. Though I really don't have many poor things to say about the Building Blocks.
I received a list of vitamins, forms and amounts that I should be looking for in my vitamins. These new ones come the closest and they are cheaper than the Building Blocks.
You may want to check it out. I haven't tasted it but have samples coming for my support group. So we shall see.

Kaycie, if there is a Trader Joe's near you, get thier sublingual B-12 - it tastes like strawberries, and is really quite good.

My Vitamin Schedule
I'm 5 days out from surgery and I'm already taking my chewables...
Here is what I have to be taking:
Bariatric Advantage Chewable Iron (Ferrous Fumarate) 29mg twice a day. Doc said that because I'm young and still menstrating that I should be getting at least 50 mg of iron per day.
Chewable Calcium Citrate (w/ Magnesium and Vitamin D) 1500mg a day. Each tablet is 600mg, and I'm taking 3 chewables per day.
Flinstone's Kids MultiVitamin- I take two of these per day. It's nice because the multivitamin contains Iron and Calcium so I'm getting a little extra throughout the day. The multivitamin also contains Biotin which I'm really excited about because helps your hair and you can't find that in chewables. I will start taking my Biotin again after the 30 day mark, but until then I'm at least getting some in the multivitamin.
I take the multivitamin with breakfast, and then take the iron 30 minutes AFTER breakfast with 1 oz of orange juice- the doctor said the orange juice is supposed to aid in iron absorption. Then, I take my calcium 2-3 hours later... I guess taking the calcium to closely with the iron prevents iron absorption. I take another calcium in the midafternoon. Then, I take another multivitamin and iron chewable with dinner, and then shoot for my final calcium chewable in the late evening.
I think everything will be much easier when I'm able to swallow whole pills- the chewable iron is just AWFUL, and the rest of the pills aren't super yummy either.

Okay, I've read all the posts and I have to say I'm more confused now then when I first started. It seems like everyone has a different opinion on the vitamins. I'm about 3 weeks away from surgery, so sitting here trying to decide what vitamins I need to order. I know that vitamins are very important, but then again I dont want to spend triple the money for them if theres something cheaper that is just as good.

Marina - the current recommendation for RNY folk is 200% of the daily recommended dose of vitamins. Unfortunately, 2 Flintstones a day don't meet our needs. Apart from the quantities not being high enough, you have to question what form some of these ingredients are in. The calcium for instance is calcium carbonate and not citrate.
These are the current recommendations for normal people, established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - they should be doubled for us:
Vitamin A (50% as beta carotene) 5000IU
Vitamin C 60mg
Vitamin D 400IU (we should take cholecalciferol)
Vitamin E 30IU (we should take d-alpha-tocopheryl acetate)
Vitamin K 80mcg
Thiamin 1.5mg
Riboflavin 1.7mg
Niacin 20mg
Folate 0.4mg (400mcg)
Vitamin B-12 6mcg (this is a joke - we need way more)
Biotin 300mcg
Pantothenic 10mg
If you want an interesting read, this was released in March of this year. Page 7 is where the good stuff starts. http://download.journals.elsevierhea...8908001639.pdf
Vickilyn - I confess that my opinion on vitamins has changed recently. I took regular multivitamins because they were cheaper. Unfortunately, I then found myself having deficiencies which ultimately meant I had to buy more and more supplements to play catch-up.
I've been swayed by Celebrate Vitamins. The ingredients are in the right form and quantity for us. Bariatric Vitamins | Gastric Bypass Vitamins | Celebrate Bariatric Vitamins

I really do like the flavors & texture of their multi... and the flavor of their calcium is the best I've tried. I had an issue with the calcium tablets breaking up in the bottle, but we're going to try a second bottle as he says that hasn't been a problem they've seen so far.
At this point, I would also recommend giving them a try, in any case.
