Sorry, I just think you guys should really question your docs and do some research on the long term impact of vitamin deficiencies in gastric bypass patients. Corrine here has posted some wonderful information about vitamins and the potential problems when you take the wrong ones/wrong kind. Be your own advocates... your life is worth so much more than a children's vitamin!

Flintstones for an adult that has a risk of lifelong vitamin deficiencies drives me bat-shit crazy.
Yikes!

I did some research. Flinstones Complete (twice daily) seems to be the norm for the month after surgery. (I'm 11 days out.) This is from the recommendations from http://www.hopkinsbayview.org/bariat...ion_bypass.pdf

Because you will absorb vitamins and minerals differently after surgery, daily vitamin supplementation is required for the rest of your life.
Multivitamin (MVI) with Minerals
• Take one chewable multivitamin twice a day for the first month then switch to two adult formulated MVI or prenatal vitamins per day
*MVI must contain 100% RDA for iron (18 mg), folic acid (400 mcg), and thiamin (1.5 mg))
• Take with food
• Examples: Flintstone Complete®, Centrum Chewable®

What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Yeah, I know that lots of docs recommend them, but in my opinion, they do so in the hopes you'll take SOMETHING, which is better than nothing at all.. and those are easy to find just about anywhere.

Personally, I take a vitamin that is made for bariatric patients... I find mine at Walgreens.. Optisource for Bariatric patients. I also take calcium made for bariatric patients called Bariatric Advantage, which I get online from Vitalady.

I am not trying to be rude though I can see how my first post may have come across....but I just feel *so* strongly that we have to be the ones that drive this bus, as WE are the ones that will suffer any consequences if we don't.. not our nuts nor our surgeons.

Good luck

(oh, and many are not 'prescribing' children's vites for just one month.. some people are remaining on these children vitamins for months/years and are sure that this is the right thing to do.. and why not, since it was recommended by their Doc?

And Docs can't be wrong! --- as a personal note: I have written to the MA medical board about 2 docs in my life.. one that gave my 9 month old son aspirin when he had a fever of 105 and insisted that tylenol was what could cause rys syndrome (sp?), not asprin so I have personal experience with doctors that are not informed with current medical research.. they're busy people and it happens.)

I didn't take it as rude. I could tell you felt strongly about the subject.

I'm a newbie at this. One of the reason I visit this board is to learn from you and others who've been down this road. I want to get optimal, healthy results and avoid any pitfalls. I sure hope other newbies avoid the pitfall I experienced with not chewing the vitamin.

Thanks for the information about Optisource. When I go back for followup, I will ask the doctor about it. Another good pal of mine told me to, "Ditch the flintstones and take Bariatric Advantage Chewable Multivitamins." Again chew...chew...chew

I do like the bariatric advantage chocolate 'lozenges' (not really a lozenge, but a chewable).. calcium .. I already had the optisource vitamins so I didn't bother to switch over when I found the calcium. Just make sure your calcium is Citrate not carbonate, as we no longer have the gastric juices that will digest the carbonate.
