Back Pain on Left Side
Hey gang,
I am 4 weeks post op and down 40lbs. Still having a hard time with food so on just SF popsicles and SF electrolyte drinks right now. The question I had is, I am getting a wierd pain in my back on the left. Almost like back ache but to the side. Comes and goes but mainly when sitting for about 30 mins or more. Any ideas what could be causing this? It goes away if I lay down.

Sounds muscular in origin.
A kidney stone...you would have pain no matter what position. If you are having no fevers and it goes away, it is probably nothing, but if it persists you had better give your MD a call.

What are symptoms of kidney stones?
While some kidney stones may not produce symptoms (known as "silent" stones), people who have kidney stones often report the sudden onset of excruciating, cramping pain in their low back and/or side, groin, or abdomen. Changes in body position do not relieve this pain. The pain typically waxes and wanes in severity, characteristic of colicky pain (the pain is sometimes referred to as renal colic). It may be so severe that it is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Kidney stones also characteristically cause blood in the urine. If infection is present in the urinary tract along with the stones, there may be fever and chills.

My doc told me to report all unusual pain... for you own peace of mind, put a call in so that he can tell you that your normal.

I experienced exactly the same thing, in fact I am STILL experiencing it, and I am six weeks out. My pain started the same time as yours, around 4 weeks out.
I've spoken with my Surgeons nurses several times about this, and they assure me that it is TOTALLY normal. They say that it is the biggest complaint they get. It starts around the fourth week, and continues for an indefinate period of time, perhaps a month or more.
I WOULD discuss this with your Doctor, just to be sure. But I have found that numerous people have experienced what you (and i)are!

Thanks for the response. I am 4 weeks post op. My doctor ordered blood work yesterday so I will get the results I assume Monday. Did your doctor provide you with a cause of the pain?
One other question I have, what volume of food and what type of food are you eating?
I am up to 10 oz of water and a couple of spoons of jello. I am having a real hard time eating anything (Hot Flashes, Cramping and nausea). I have just had a bost high protein 8oz for the first time. Not to bad. I also have Isopure 40g protien drink that I will be taking later. I am worried that I am not eating enough to keep up my energy or nutrition. My doctor has me back on fluids only again until he gets back in town. They think it may be a possible stricture.
I also had a pocket infection 2 weeks in that still has an open incision that I need to pack everyday.
Cant wait to eat a piece of grilled chicken with salsa!!!!

At 4 weeks postop I was on about 1/2 cup of food. I was eating things like cottage cheese, refried beans, creamed soups, oatmeal, soft cooked vegetables and just starting really thin deli meats.
If you do have a stricture, which by the sounds of it is a possibility you probably won't be tolerating much more than the liquids. If it isn't a stricture it could also be an ulcer. Does the doctor have you on any ulcer medication? If not you may want to see if he will start something especially if you can't see him for a little while. It won't hurt to take them and it might just help.
You aren't getting in enough water or protein. Right now though, think fluids, fluids, fluids. You don't want to get dehydrated. The recommended amount of fluids for us in one day is 64 oz of fluids and you are only getting in 10 oz. So sip, sip, sip...all day long. Dehydration is one of the biggest concerns in regards to a stricture and it can land you back in the hospital and very sick.
I hope your doctor is back really soon. If you get any worse you should probably get yourself into an ER to get an IV and some fluids into you.
