Workout Suggestions
Hey - I thought it would be a good idea to share tips on exercising and working out.
Does anyone know of good exercises for the upper body? My legs seem to be toning a bit, but my stomach, breasts, and behind have yet to match that pace.
I try to work out every day but do not always meet that. Here is my routine:
1 hour cardio vascular eliptical machine (cross country type)
1 hour weight machines (rowing, crunch, leg push, etc)
What works for you?

The best workouts I ever did, and the my trainer now does with me are from Bill Phillips' book - Body for Life. I think his routines are on his website, bodyforlife.com.
Check it out - I was amazed at the results, from the workouts alone.
His whole thing is that you don't need to do an hour of cardio. The idea is to do cardio for 20 minutes, but at different intensity levels. It makes a world of difference. I felt more in that 20 minutes than an hour. He also gives you some routine ideas for weight lifting as that is the key to shaping your body.
Good luck.

My current routine is MWF walking for 45 - 60 minutes (preparing for 60 mile - 3 Day) T&T one hour of yoga, Sunday 7 to 10 miles, and Saturday rest. I'm not loosing much weight, but the inches are falling off.

Another advocate
Body for life. Best workout guidelines EVER! My sister and I both use it and we began to see results SO quickly. I started it at two months post op and I've toned up so well. I have very little extra skin. I don't know if that is the reason, but that aside it is a great workout routine to keep up with and the results are phenominal (sp?)

I hired a trainer so I don't have to think about it. I do what he says and then at the same time I am learning suff to do in the future.
We do alot of "core" training. This makes the body more stable and works out everything. Cardio and weights. It keeps me from being bored,
I reccommend a trainer because it keeps you focused and he can work on specific areas.
I have a really good one if any one needs one. He is at L.A. Fitness in Vista. They have payment plans and all that.

How soon after surgery can you workout? Also, what is the best workout after surgery to start. I am having anxiety. My surgery is in 12 days.

My doctor said I could only walk the first two weeks and then begin weights in the third week. Of course, 5 and 10 pounds only to start.
The best workout depends on whether you will be going to a gym or not. As a starter several people who went through the program where I am going, liked the Walk Away the Pounds program by Leslie Sansone. You'll get an all over body workout. Body for Life is another good one. You can do that at home or in the gym.

Don't over do it!
As far as workouts Bill Phillips is a master!!! Body for life is simply amazing. I used to be a real workout nut before the BIG GAIN as I like to call my post quitting smoking, drama with the ex, excuses, excuses etc. What is so important is that you do workout everyday, but NOT overdoing it. The experts agree that 20 minutes of cardio in your target heart range is IDEAL for optimum weight loss. no more than 30 minutes of weight training. After WLS the 20 minutes of cardio is the most important. Cardio is just walking. As you progress move to spinning, climber, eliptical, incl. treadmill etc. Cardio is king. As for weight training, no need to go any further than simple dumbells. There are literally hundreds of different excercises you can do with 2 or 3 different weighted dumbells. High sets, High Reps. If you overdo you workouts you can have a reverse effect in what you are trying to accomplish. Take it easy...if you don't you can get what I got. From over use of my feet, i have an avulsion(bone chip)...which turned into plantar facilitis......talk about pain!!! So I am side tracked on cardio, but I still make sure to do 20 minutes of light weight upperbody excercises ever other day. Talk to some trainers at the gym, there are a billion websites, magazines etc. Most importantly speak with your Doc.....Best of Luck to everyone--my 2 cents...John

Thanks for all the tips. I have the body for life books but seem to get a bit overwhelmed with how to exactly do all the workouts. I am not sure exactly how to work the program. I am so excited about my surgery 8 days!!!
If anyone has any advice on how to work the program please let me know.
Thanks Vicki
