Default Pill taking???

How do you take pills post op? I am sure they send you home with pain killers after the WLS but I was told you can not swallow whole pills, do you chew them? Or crush and put them in some jello? What would work best?

when I first got home I had tablets that were tiny and melted in my mouth for pain. After those I had to crush them. I put them in an envelope and beat them with a lighter. Then I found this nifty invention called a pill crusher available at any pharmacy. I felt like an idiot! I crush everything but my thyroid meds. Even tylenol. I don't know if I still have too but I'm scared to swallow them whole.

We had chewable vitamins to take in the first few weeks. I was able to swallow horse pills rather early. I gought liquid vitamins at Costco that are great. I also had the Lortab (liquid vicodin) that worked great. I think everyone is different though in terms of swallowing pills.

Hi Laura,

I am I think the most recent post-op, I am still taking my pain med and although it is nasty I crush mine, the best part is they work faster when they are already broke down. If you have to crush yours and you can tolerate it try mixing them in a very small spoon of carb monitor yogurt, it helps cut the bitter taste. Best Wishes
Sue

You can go back to pills after a few months. I can not stand the taste of crushed meds. Early post-op, I had chewables or liquid meds. Read the labels as many chewable and liquid stuff contain sugar.

Well I am already on chewable prenatal vitamins since my pregnancy and my Dr said I can stay on them. I will ask about the liquid pain killers as I HATE the taste of crushed pills , but if it's what I have to do it's what I have to do .
