Default Couple of questions...

I came home yesterday afternoon after having lap RNY on Wed., 6/11.

My neck and throat hurt worse than my belly. Any advice on alleviating the pain? I'm assuming it was the position on the table and the breathing tube.

How soon did you get active again? I don't want to overdo it, but I don't want to simply lay around. I did walk about 10 minutes yesterday morning before they discharged me. How soon did you "go out" again?

I heard about this here and in a support group meeting - get your doc to approve some kind of lozenge (sugar free)... hopefully something numbing... else maybe cepacol spray which is numbing for the back of throat...

and or a pain med (but don't combine if you are still on something), like liquid tylenol??

My surgery was Monday, 6/9, and my doctor sent me home with Oxycodone (Percocet). The script says 1-2 every 4-6 hrs., but I'm only taking 1 because more than that and I'm apt to feel nauseous (they sent me home with a pill for that as well). Did they send you home with anything?

My neck muscles were wicked sore as well but they feel almost better now, just a few days later. My throat wasn't sore though. Do you have a heating pad or one of those things that are filled with barley (or something like that) that cna be microwaved to heat it? That might help the neck, just don't get it too hot.

I'm walking around the house (to get water, go to the bathroom, etc.) but I'm not going anywhere or going for walks, it seems way too early for that. My left side is very sore. I feel much better today than I did 2 days ago, so I assume I'll feel even better in 2 more days! I need to get a Father's Day gift for my dad, so I'll probably go to a store tonight or tomorrow with DH (can't drive while on Percs, and I don't really want to go out by myself yet anyway).

You had surgery on 6/11 and they sent you home on 6/12? That seems really quick. My doctor wanted me to stay until 6/12 (I begged to go home) and my surgery was 2 days before yours. There is no way I could have gone home 1 day afer surgery, I couldn't even get out of bed at that point, I was a mess. I'm curious to see comments from the more experiences people. I've never heard of a one-nighter for RNY (lap-band, yes).

I had surgery on a Tuesday and went home on Friday. By that time, I was walking laps every hour and was told to continue that at home to keep from getting blood clots. So at home I would walk around the block about 4 times a day. Gotta keep the circulation going. It also gets you into the exercise habit which is good to keep up forever. I walk 1/2 hr most nights. I didn't have a problem with the throat so can't help you there.

Other than 'sugar free' lozenges (get them approved), are you allowed to take showers (I know that most doc's nix baths for a bit).

A nice steaming shower will help your throat relax and your muscles relax, etc., You don't have to wash, just let the water run down your back (or front). Have some water run on your throat, too.

You can use a steaming washcloth on your throat as well which will help with the throat muscles.

DRINK: Crystal light tea and raspberry tea is pretty good heated up (but not too hot). Add some CL lemon to the tea for a more tart lemon tea.

Your throat will feel better in no time.

I once had a breathing tube down my throat and was in ICU for 4 days with my mouth taped shut... seems I couldn't breath on my own. Anyway, I spent a month in the hospital after that, and a lot of that time NPO (no food or liquid). After 3 weeks, I sneaked in 'sugar free' lemon mint Riccola because the stuff they gave me was horrible, and I couldn't stand how my throat felt anymore. After I started on the Riccola, I slept better, though my throat healing actually took about 2 months.

After my recent RNY, I had my doc approved Riccola ready!

Feel better!

My throat hurt for about 3 days after my 2 surgeries. I agree about the lozenges, they also may have some kind of swabs at the hospital. I got some lemon ones to suck on and wet my mouth because it was soo dry. It seemed to help a bit with the throat. It will go away soon, feel better!

Oh and I was up walking as much as possible, SLOWLY, the day after surgery. I walk, walk, walked in short distances at first but very frequently, at least every couple of hours, until I was walking the whole floor.

Regarding being active, I was walking the floor the day of my surgery, had to walk every hour at the hospital until I was released (including at night -- the nurse would wake me up to check my vitals and make me walk!).

My written instructions were to walk at least 5 minutes per hour, every waking hour, starting the day I was released.

You need to be as active as possible to avoid blood clots!

They would wake you to make you walk? OMG, I would have been a zombie. They half woke me every 2 hours to take vitals, but that was it. I didn't walk until more than 24 hours after surgery. Did you have those things on your legs that expand and contract? I had those until the morning after they took the catheter out, the day I was discharged in fact.

It's interesting how differently hospitals and doctors do things!

I had those! They were meant to keep the blood flowing to prevent clots. I felt that they were rather annoying. It was just another thing that needed to be unfastened before I could drag myself and my IV to the restroom. And thanks to the always flowing IV, that seemed like every 10 minutes.

One of the many reasons I insisted prior to having the surgery that they were not to take my catheter away from me until 7 full days post-op..
