Default Need Advice: How much should I consume?

Surgery: May 20, 2008
Ok, so I have a question for those who can remember being 3 weeks post op...how much should I be able to consume at 3 weeks? For example, I can eat about 3/4 of the small, microwaveable cans of soup at my biggest meal(the campbells kind with the red top). I have had no naseau, and have eaten beef and chicken with no problem. A typical day looks like this: Breakfast-4 tbsp of diced cucumbers, Lunch-2 tbsp of seafood salad, Dinner-5tbsp of spaghetti with meat sauce. Is this too much...what do you guys think? By the way, I work out vigorously approximately 5-6 times/week.

I had my surgery on May 29, so I'm just about a week behind you. I usually eat a 1/4 cup at a time, 3 or 4 times a day. I tried a 1/2 cup of couple of times, but it didn't sit well on my pouchie. Things like cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, etc, I do 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of.

However, if what you posted is a typical menu to you, I think you should be very concerned with your protein intake. Skip the diced cucumbers for breakfast, and have a protein rich food instead. (Egg, LF cheese, LF ricotta cheese, FF refried beans, FF SF yogurt, Fage 2% greek yogurt, etc). The seafood salad is probably okay...depending on what is in it. Your dinner (spaghetti w/ meat sauce), probably doesn't have enough protein in it either. Things like pasta should be very, very secondary in your diet right now. If you're eating soup, be sure to mix in either some unflavored protein powder, or even chicken flavored protein powder (I recommend Unjury brand).

I am keeping a log of my daily intake. Near the end of day, if I see I am short of my protein intake (about 60 grams a day for a woman), I'll have a protein shake. Protein is very important...it helps you lose fat instead of muscle, helps your body recovery from the surgery, and helps in not losing major amounts of hair.

Did you doc give you any nutritional info to follow? If not, or if he didn't give you much, check out the recent post from MiladyB, entitled "My surgeon's food plan". It's over on the Nutrition section of the boards.

Best of luck!

I'm surprised by your diet ... I know Dr. Callery is extremely thurough with this kind of thing.
I agree with Sherry 100%
I don't think you're eating too much. Not at all. But I do think you're making the wrong food choices.
You need to check out the "Nutrition" forum. Tons of great info there.

Default Thanks Ladies

Thanks for the info ladies. I definetly need to consume more protein, but I failed to mention that I eat beans, tuna fish and small amounts of chicken slices as well. The menu I posted was what I ate today so I guess "typical" was the wrong word to use. I do have a nutrition guide to follow, and pasta, soft or steamed vegetables, cottage cheese, beans and soups are a few of the items there. I can always add more protein so I'm not concerned with that; the amount of food was my issue, but one of you said I'm not eating too much, so I feel better already.

Where can I find unjury brand? I have a $90 tub of vanilla flavored protein powder that Dr. Callery recommended so I'm limited in what I can mix it with unfortunately.

You can buy Unjury at unjury.com...not sure, but I don't think it's offered anywhere else.

$90 for a tub of protein...holy moly! For that price, it should be the size of a beer keg, lol.

I agree with Julie I am 10 months post op and my docs head would explode if he knew i was eating pasta now, much less 3 weeks post op. Your main focus should be lean protein at this time.

I'm 4 1/2 weeks out and I can eat different amounts depending on the type of food. I can eat less solid foods and stay full because they stay around longer. For example, I can eat 3-4 medium shrimp, and I'm way done. But if it's soup, it's 1/2 a Progresso can before I'm done. I try to eat my protein first so I eat less, but eating less is not really something I have to work on at this point.
