Unhappy 2 week follow up & started soft solids & dumping already (maybe?)

I had my 2 week followup yesterday. Weighed in 21 pounds less than pre op (Duh! I knew that! LOL) Everything was good. My incisions are healed up really good now and he says I and doing great. I go back again in a month and have to have bloodwork done 2 weeks prior to my appt.

Dr released me to start on soft solids and gave me a list of things I can have. Fish was one of those things along with a lot of other things that I have seen on here for others as being forbidden. Crackers is one! I was amazed. I will stay away from them for awhile. I dont want to mess anything up.

I have had a couple of tiny servings of refried beans in the last week and they stayed down good with no issues. Well I decided to try fish last nite. I fixed a tilapia fillet (2 ounces no seasonings broiled in its own juices) and in the 20 min I am allowed to eat, I managed 5 teeny tiny bites. I chewed each bite at least 40 times. It wasnt dry fish but nice and flaky with a bit of moisture in it. About 5 minutes after I got up from the table, I thought I was going to vomit. By the time I got to the bathroom I thought it was coming out the other end! OMG what agony! Nothing happened. I laid in bed in agnoy for about an hour thinking i was dieing. I dont know if that was dumping or what. I know what my normal dumping (pre-op) was like, heart palpitations, sweating, tummy pain, diarrhea, etc. I only had the pain last night, nothing else. The pain seemed to be in my abdomen area not my stomach area.

I probably ate 1/4 of an ounce of the fish if that-- that is all I managed in 20 minutes. It wasnt much but I was comfortable. I am not going to try it again for awhile.

Did I dump last nite? Or was my pouch just not used to the more solid texture? What happened?!?

I am so scared to eat now although I am managed to eat a 1 oz string cheese stick this morning for breakfast chewing really good again and so far no issues. I am almost scared to get out of my chair thinking the pain will start again!

That may not have been dumping. I would say your stomach just wasn't ready for it yet. You were on liquids before that, right? I was not allowed to have fish until 1 month. I could have tuna at your stage though.

Default same here

I expirienced absolutely the same at my 4th and 5th week. I also cooked fish and I ate a bit in the evening..and the then the pain came...the same as you described...the same happened to me with shrimps...I think indeed the stomac was not ready for that, or maybe we didnt chew good the food...In any case although was alowed to go to regular diet after week 4, we should really take care what we put in at least until week 7 or 8. It should be soft meat..for example my stomac loves chiken liver pieces..they are so so soft...no problem at all..
Cheers,
Sunny

I'm definitely NOT knowledgable about "dumping" (thank goodness!), but it does sound as if your pouch didn't want that fish at this time. I'd wait a week and try it again. With my experience...even if the meat is MOIST...I have to add a sauce of some form (be it ketchup, BBQ sauce, mayo, or mustard) that seems to help "coat" the protein so my pouch can handle it.

Each pouch is different (and can change often)...my pouch didn't like toast for the longest time, but now I can eat a LITTLE bit of hard crusted bread (like sour dough)...just the crust, not the doughy bread part.

Good luck and keep us posted on your pissy little pouch issues!

I wasn't cleared for the solid stuff until 3 weeks but I had a real issue with meat and fish early out. Ground beef (as in chili) was the only thing that didn't make me feel queasy.

Even now, I find it hard to eat any meat (white or dark) unless it's chopped up very finely with some sauce of some kind.

I'm not too bothered as I've always preferred a vegetarian diet.

It sometimes takes a while for us to work out what our pouch likes and dislikes and then it's a constantly changing thing anyway!

Default Pissy Pouch ...

I'm 9 weeks out and still can't tollerate fish. I've tried baked fish, canned tuna and shrimp ... all of which piss off the Pouch!
It's not dumping. My surgeon explained that it was because the opening from my pouch to my intestine is so tiny ... the 'solid' food gets kinda stuck in there for a while causing pain.
I'm still eating mushy foods and wish so badly I could eat more 'normal' foods. It sure would help when trying to order something in a restaurant!
I try once a week, and so far, no good. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be biting into a cheeseburger any day now

Stay patient.
