Default birth control?.....ladies question

okay well......last week i went in for my annual exam & i asked my doctor about BC pills and absorbtion <<<<< i failed to discuss this pre-op....didn't really matter i haven't had a partner is over 3 years........anyways, i asked if i would be able to rely on the pills and he said "now, that's a good question" but he really didn't answer it..........i'm not really active anyways right now so i'm not in a big hurry but he said that I should avoid preganancy for 2 years.....NOW, I RESPONDED WITH "DR. I REALLY HAVE NO INTENTIONS OF HAVING ANYMORE CHILDREN.......EVER!!!!!!" So, he suggested the paraguard iud.........anyone have any knowledge or opinions about this? I go in tomorrow, provided the fairy doesn't visit.....lol.

The two year guideline is not something that every physician would agree with.

My understanding is that your fertility increases typically after weight loss surgery.

You cannot rely on the birth control pill.

I would never use an IUD but that's a personal decision. I have other concerns about them - nothing related to GBS

Default I have the mirena

Our surgeon said he "highly recommended" that we use some other form of bc besides the pill b/c the hormone changes and absorption issues after surgery would make the pill less affective. I seriously didn't even want to think about getting pregnant so I went with the Mirena IUD about 4 months before surgery. I haven't had any problems with it. I still have a period and they've been a little different that before but nothing major. Overall, its been great and my doc said that my periods might even get lighter, less frequent, or even stop after a few months. Some people might be wary of that, but I'm all for it. And the fact that I don't have to even think about it for the next 5 years is a bonus. I guess its just whatever you think is best for you.

I have had an iud since my youngest was born 5 years ago (I'm 1 year out). I have a copper-T which is non-hormonal. I would recommend it to any one. I will say though that I have had several friends who have not had surgery get IUD's (both the copper and mirena one) and their periods have gotten worse. I didn't know that it was a possibility but one or two have gotten to the point where they had their IUD removed because their periods became very very heavy and long with cramping. I don't know what the percentage of people this happens to is but it's something that you should probably know going into getting one. But again that said I LOVE mine and don't plan on getting rid of my IUD except to get another one when this one needs to be replaced.

I took bc pills right after surgery, and never had any problems. I didn't get pregnant right away etc. I did have to change the dosage but that was it. However when I went off the pill 6 days later I got pregnant, but that was why I was going off the pill.

Exclamation Look out!

I'm pre-op

I was on the birth control patch for about 2 years and developed blood clots in my lungs last year. (very serious) So neadless to say I cannot go on ANY form of birth control pill. My doctor wanted me to get an IUD. SO I went to the appointment thinking this would be great. Dont have to worry about taking a pill..blah blah. Any-who...A different GYN was going to put it in. He explained that it might be a little uncomfortable because I havent had any childern. OK WOW. A LITTLE??? I have never felt pain like that before in my life. The nurse laughed at me and said to me...you just got a taste of childbirth! I bow down to all the mothers out there!!! Well I couldnt do it, he never finished. So I talked to the doctor about other options. Being my blood clot history, going to have major surgery, and then the new pouch. He said the best bet would be after surgery (so I dont run the risk of getting a clot during surgery) I should go with the Deppo shot. It has a different hormone that doesnt cause blood clots AND its injected so absorbtion isnt a problem.

Long story short...If you havent had childern yet an IUD is a bad idea!!!! For love of all that is holly!!!!

Why did you have to change the dosage? Did it go higher or lower? I just got the pill again for the first time in years. I told my doctor all about my GBS, but she still gave me a low-estrogen dosage. Now I'm worried maybe it should've been a higher dose?

Thanks!
