Default Getting fat..

Has anyone gained weight 30 months after surgery? It seems like I can't lose weight. I've tried for a month to drop the 5 lbs the is that has creeped up on my stomach. I feel bloated all the time. My routine has not changed if anything I've cut calories to about 1400/per day including two protein drinks with fresh stawberries and soy milk.
Does everyone gain weight after a couple of years?

Default gaining weight

I really believe that after a couple years you do gain weight. I really believe this surgery is made to have you go from obese to overweight. They say you'll loose 75 percent of your weight and i think it's very true. I'm 5 years out and got to 118 and i'm now 160. when i had surgery i was 240. i lost 75 percent of my weight. my friend was telling me basically she saw a show recently on bypass surgery and they said the surgery is not to make you super skinny. It's to have you go from obese to overweight and loose 75 percent of your weight.

Default Oh no!

I disagree! Yes you can gain weight, is it typical? Only if you accept it!

Melanie kept the weight off for years, she was also active in support groups and walked everyday, that stopped.

I had the surgery as well, and have kept my weight off. Does 5-10 pounds creep up now and again Absolutley! Do I take a self analysis, look if I have been snacking or eating bad foods Yes I do. Does this self inventory usually show that I have been making poor choices? You betcha! Its about being accountable to self! I never accept keeping those extra pounds, I make changes and then drop em like a bad habit! so can you!!

Jeni, at one time you were walking and exercising regularily, are you still doing that? I know the dynamic of support group as changed, and urge you to go to Dr C's groups in Poway or at Sharp Memorial andor join OA. You need support. Are you having relationship woes that are leading to emotional eating?

You can a will lose those damn pounds if you want to. You have the power, not some damn surgery! You have a tool that allows you to eat lesss! Not a tool that allowed you to get this to allow you to get overweight. Thats bullshit, and I will not allow nor enable you to make excuses! I never have and I never will.

Make a plan! Food plan and menu!
Get back to walking and drinking 80, yes 80 ozs f water a day! Waterload before meals!

Do these, you will see results! I want results from you Jen, not excuses! Go take the world and your diet by the horns and make a change! You go girl!

I eat 500-800 calories a day. Yogurt and fruit for breakfast, 200 cals meal for lunch and dinner. Almonds in between or string cheese and vitamin water hroughout the day. (I have pepsei too, usually about 16 oz on a high drinking day, but an average of 300 calories a day come fom pepsi in addition to 500-800 calories in eating. I stop the the pepsi to drop the pounds.

BTW you dont have to exercise to lose weight, you have to change your eating habits though. You felt good when you walked, it releases endorphins and that made you feel good about yourself. Ge back to the basics like the good ol days. Gimme a call if you need too. I moved away, but kept my number local for my peeps!

This is great to know Bridgetgirl! I had heard that about only losing 75% of your weight and I didn't want to believe it. And you're not alone right? There are many more that have kept it off I hope?

Bridget your words of wisdom and honesty are fantastic. I had heard that same story about the obese to overweight and thought to myself, I am grateful I achieved my desired weight and I dont plan on going backwards to the hell life I had before and now having my new hip as a result of the weight loss accomplishment, I definately appreciate reading your experience.

Emotional termoyal in ones life is destructive if not handled with support and inner strengths that have come to us through our journeys on this path. I think for myself I have to remember what and why I took this journey.

Jenni, dont accept the being an overweight person story. Get the support and help that has worked for you over the years. You have come too far to get caught in the old traps of excuses and accepting less than you can be and deserve to be.

I wish you all the best and thanks Bridget for the great words of wisdom.

Bridgett

I do have to say, I do walk every morning at 5:00 with Dara. We walk 2 1/2 miles during the week. on the weekends 4 miles. I will say Dara has the same issue. She ended up stablizing out at about a 75 percent weight loss. Dara and I are also older than you. we're in our 50's, have gone through menopause. I think that has something to do with it, also. I'm also on hormonal therapy. In my particular situation I find if I eat protein, fruits vegs, no carbs I i'll loose the weight, but to live a realistic lifestyle and eat like a normal person and regular food, but smaller portions, i cannot loose the extra weight. Like I say, I think other things factor into it when you get older and your body starts changing.

It depends on how you look at things.

75% success I am a 75% success weight loss success story, medically. Numbers are perfect, people are not. I was 298 at surgery, initial weightloss goal per Dr C and the letter of weightloss necessity was 141 pounds. The lowest weight I got to was 150 pounds. I got a horrible stomach virus to get to 150, but I was THIN, and I couldnt stand looking a myself, and my peers were not impressed either. I bumped up to 155-160 and I feel better and look better. At 165 I feel "curvy" oddly enough, but fabulous just the same. I am comfortable within 155-165, my body fat percentage is 20-22% normal low end for someone of my height and weight... PERECT in my eyes. But accordingto statistics, i.e. the letter of medical necessity that stated I should weight 141, when in fact I weigh around 160 makes me a 75% weightloss percentage candidate. I hope that I explained that well.

Yes I believe age has to do with alot of thing, Im no whipper snapper, although I feel like one (Im 35) If you continue to have the same routine for a long period of time with regard to caloric intake and activity your body will adjust that to the new "normal", so you have to change your eating AND exercising. Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Loren Hutton, Farah Fawcett..... they are in their 50's too, and look amazing!

Look for my new post in long term suppot for this, so many people will be able to access it. I learned more about breaking plateaus from a fitness trainer last night at SUPPORT GROUP! Stay in support group-no matter what! Jeni, call me if you need me!

Default In case it sounded like i was lying or something

My experience doesn't match the 75% obese to overweight stats. Never heard of them.
I lost all my excess weight, have had a normal BMI since 11 mos. post op and have maintained that.
I lost weight when I had stress, regained it and was back to my normal BMI.
I gained weight when I had a relationship (he was a pig) and lost it when we broke up and I went back to MY normal eating habits.
I had surgery in October 2002 and yeah, you can gain a few, but you can lose them too. Easily.
That's the whole idea of a small stomach.
