Default dumping syndrome

Hi everyone, I am 2 weeks post-op today. Could someone describe to me what the "dumping" feels like? I haven't taken vitamins yet either. Some are so large, do I really have to crush them? I'm also curious about what some people are eating 2 weeks after surgery. My guide says only pureed, but does everyone stick to that? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Laura

Thumbs up

Hi, Laura,

I'm 1 month out and I really can't tell you about dumping cuz it hasn't happened to me (knock on wood!!!) but at 10 days, we were oked to eat soft foods, like eggs, oatmeal, steamed vegs, really crisp bacon (suprisingly), tofu, potatos (mashed), bananas, flaky fish (I've tried salmon).

I know there's more, but this is the kind of stuff I'm trying to eat now. Just taking it slow to figure out what will stay down and I'll still feel good. I've started on a protein drink in morning cuz I'm afraid I'm not getting enuf. Hope that helps. Good luck,

Default dumping

Hey Laura,
Actually I'm only 2 months post op and had my first dumping a couple days ago. I dumped after eating a small amount of salad dressing. So I think you should know that different foods effective everyone differently. For me, it was really bad stomach cramps, headahce and I felt like I was gonna die, but I laid down for about 1 hour and felt better after I woke up. Your just gonna have to wait and see how your body is gonna respond. Good luck, Janice

Thumbs up Dumping & Pureed foods

Dumping is a syndrome brought on by eating sugar and/or too many carbs. For some people it means vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, sleepiness, sweating, chills, heart pounding, or all of the symptoms at once. There are other symptoms as well like nausea and stuff.. but you get the picture.. you feel like you are going to die and wish you would at times.. It sucks.. you'll know it if you do it.

Now if you eat too fast, eat too much, or drink too much with a meal you will make yourself miserable.. this is not dumping it is simply making yourself miserable.. even though you may have some of the same symptoms as dumping it is not technically dumping.

As far as pureed foods, we didn't do them. Our Doctor wanted us to chew the crap out of the food till it was pureed in our mouths.. they wanted us to learn to chew our food. And if we didn't chew it well enough.. we'd learn the lesson.. lol

I agree and like the fact that we could put real food in our mouth. It made the transition that much easier for me and a lot of others. Good luck to you.

The schedule that my doctor gave me says:
3 weeks of liquids
4-6 weeks soft pureed foods (chewed up to the pureed consistency)
At 3 months regular foods
