Bill I have to echo Michelle's concern. I've never heard of that much bleeding going on with this surgery unless it has something to do with the fact that they repaired a hiatal hernia along with it. What you describe sounds exactly like a GI bleed. Is the blood bright red or dark maroon in color? Like Michelle said, I would push to have some tests to make sure you don't have an active bleed going on someplace. I sure hope they are frequently checking your hemoglobin. With patients who are GI bleeds we check it at least every 6 hours. I don't mean to scare you either but the nurse side of me really doesn't like what I read.

Thank you Beth. I truly am concerned. Before I was a nurse, my mom had a colonoscopy. Two days later she had VERY BLOODY STOOL. THey told me it was normal. I took their word for it as I didn't know any better. She died 1 1/2 weeks later.
PLEASE do not just let them fluff this off Bill. I am NOT saying you have the same issue as my mom but I just want to show you that this is/could be very serious.

GI Bleed here...
Yup! The first time I thought I passed gas in the hospital after surgery.I said,"Cool, I passed gas"...Then, I said"Why do I feel wet down there"..opened the sheet and you guessed it deep red , almost black tar like blood.
I did have an upper GI Bleed.I had toliets full of "Merlot"..The bleed ended up stopping itself , however, It took a total of two weeks and three blood transfusions. In fact, Bill...I was sent home because it had stopped for 24 hours..got home...pooped "Merlot" again and Dr. admitted me again.
The smell is the most disgusting thing I have ever smelled to this day.Yuck, yuck double yuck!!!!.Trust me if your having bloody stools you are not going anywhere any time soon.
Now....
Welcome to the loser's bench, Glad you were able to post. Now get better

VPA, you are so right! There is no smell worse than a GI bleed. Even seasoned nurses can't handle it. (I've actually vomitted in waste baskets in patient's rooms. Talk about embarassing. )

Bill, it's good to hear from you. But, echoing the others here....insist on some tests please.
Van, I don't think I'll ever be able to drink Merlot again. First Bill compared his bloody bowel movements to a small rump roast, and then it was compared to Merlot. There goes one of my favorite meals.

Greetings one and all. I write this from my hospital bed, but with no connection to iv's or the blood gas monitor. I am using my usual laptop and not my daughter's Apple. Well, here's the latest. My stool isn't bloody anymore. Although "it ain't never smelt like perfume," it's pretty gross smelling, but definitely not the deep purple merlot color of previous dumps.

Phooey...I can tell I have been away from computers for several days as the previous post was definitely unfinished. Other things I wanted to say: have had regular blood draws since the first "incident" and lab numbers are all aok. Hemoglobin is up to what my doctor has said is a very normal number. I last had a merlot-colored dump early this morning (about 1 a.m. Sat. morning) and I have had two normal bm's since then, although as I started my earlier post--the scent is not something I'd wish on anyone else. But then, I thought I've read that the stink is something that's common to people with WLS--isn't this true with flatulence and all the rest??? Anyway, I had an upper GI and it showed all was well. My doctor was there to see it first hand and was very pleased. I've had no temperature higher than 99 and in fact, it's been at 98.6 the last five times it's been taken. My Vital signs (oops--first I typed "vital sins" an interesting Freudian slip!) have been very good too. Anyway, I very much suspect I will be discharged on Sunday morning. I've been walking and sipping and using the dang spirometer like crazy and I zoom around in my blue bathrobe and Cub slippers using a walker with wheels for balance. Staff have said I move too fast, but I feel great. Haven't had the shoulder pain since earlier in the day. Have had occasional Loratab for pain, but all's gone well. In fact, my wife caught me referring to my "hospitalization" as my "vacation" earlier today and we chuckled about that. I think I am getting great support from my family and overall, fine care, especially from my doctor, who makes his rounds about 6-7 a.m. and spends about 15 minutes chatting with me--frankly, most of the docs I've ever witnessed making morning rounds don't give their patients that much time. So I am content....but appreciate the cautionary tales and at the first sign of problems I will call his office and ask what's up. Thanks, one and all. Will write more tomorrow, but I am going to check my emails now. HOpe all's well with the rest of you.
Oh, and I don't know how I took off the church's website, but it's First Congregational United Church of Christ, Downers Grove
and I will soon add it to my signature. Again, I appreciate your concerns and will take them to heart
