Default Gout!

Pre-surgery I would have gout flair ups once every 4 or 5 months, post-op it is once every 2 weeks.
I have talked to my doc and I have prescribed meds that help me...but the gout will not fully go away. Yesterday my right big toe and my left foot where hurting and making it tough to walk. Does anyone else have problems with gout? Is it flairing up because of the protein I eat? Will it get better as time goes on? If there is anyone in the same boat please let me know! I thought that by losing weight would cure the gout...so far its only increased

Chris

Gout is a form of arthritis (spell) which uric acid settles in your joints (usually lower part of your body) crystalizes and causes PAIN...pain so bad that even putting a bed sheet on your foot will be painful. This is usually caused by eating rich fatty foods and beer and shell fish....things I havent touched in quite awhile...urgh this is frustrating

Default Gout

I take Allopurinol 300 mg a day for gout. I have taken this for about 2 years now - and haven't had a gout attack since I started this medication. Before that, I had an attack any time I bumped my feet, someone stepped on me, etc..... and I would be really crippled up with it.

NOW - had Lap RNY 05/08/08. Since I started the protein shakes (I can't seem to keep any meat down yet - but some bits of talapia), I noticed that at night my big toes would throb a little bit. When they turned red, I knew I was having a gout attack. So, I read up online and found out that people with gout should NEVER take protein supplements.

I have decided to take enuf protein shakes to make up my 70-80 gm/day and hope for the best. I am also praying for my feet!!!!!

Gout is a horrible disease and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I AGREE!!

I'm still pre-op, but Lord I hope it doesnt get worse after surgery. Right now, I may have a bout once every 4 or 5 months. A few weeks ago, I received some sample packs of protein shakes in the mail. For a week I drank one sometimes two a day. At the end of the week, I had the worse Gout attack i've ever had. Was it the extra protein? This makes me nervous about post-op cause I know its fundamental to get my protein in. Does anyone know anything about this??
