I'm home ! Need suggestions with protein???
Hi Everyone,
I had my surgery on April 7th, however stayed with family a couple of days, I have been doing pretty good with getting my water in however protein has been a challenge. I bought some unflavored protein from GNC however that was the nastiest thing that I have ever had. I mixed the protein with lactaid. I just drank the lactaid this morning which only gave me 8 gm of protein today . I went back to GNC and bought some protein that is suppose to taste like cookies and cream the guy at the store said that it is one of the best sellers. The protein supplement has 20g per scoop. Do you guys have any other suggestions for protein , and what you did to make sure you got your protein in??? In help or suggestions would be appreciated.

oh them cookies and Creams about made me puke when I tried it,, was not long after surgery too.
The only thing that saved me right after surgery was Isopure, the one that comes on the glass bottles already mixed, and even that gave me stomach cramps, heck water alone gave me stomach cramps then.
I had purchased some of the large gallon powder isopure, but that got cloudy and I had problem just with the texture, so even if I still drinked it at first, I later put it off. Lately, I find my self mixing me half of serving of it since it gives me 25 grams of potein, find it that if I drink that in the mornings, I don't have to think about breakfast and worrying about eating anything until after lunch.
But yes, Isopure, either way you get it. I did not tolerate milk after surgery, gave me the runs to the restroom if you know what I mean.
Another thing, was Dannon Light and fit yogurt, very good, and it was listed as part of liquid diet by my doctor. Pudding, I did some of that, that did not gave me the runs even if it was mixed with milk. Sugar free Jello Pudding was just fine. But then again, that don't carry much protein.
Egg flour soups was one of my favorite. hmm can't think of what else.
Hope this helps, and, Welcome back  {{{scoots to make room on the bench for ya}}}

Ronda,
You ask 30 WLS folk what their protein of choice is and you'll get 40 replies!
In all seriousness - protein is very much a personal choice.
I relied on the New Whey 42 vials (GNC) early out. Half a vial in a bit of water and I got 21g protein.
Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar) isn't bad - you can make it with fat free milk and kick it up even further with some ff powdered milk.
These days I drink Isopure low car (chocolate) or Champion Pure Whey Protein Stack (good stuff - expensive but worth it IMHO).
The Stallone puddings from GNC are pretty good too - I liked the banana one and the chocolate too.
Good news - if you've still got the receipt for the protein you got from GNC, you can take it back (provided you bought it within the past 30 days).
A good idea is to go to vitalady.com - she has sample baggies of a lot of protein powders.

Hi & welcome!
I am also using the New Weigh vials liquid form for protein. They are pretty thick though and kinda pricey. The Vitaman Shoppe here in Texas sells them for $3.99 a pop but then again I am getting 42gr. of protein per vial.
I know I am not absorbing all of it but still, if you can stomach the thickness then it's pretty worth it considering.
Other than that I try to eat a tiny bit of Tuna and beans per my doct.'s approval of course.
I hope this helps.

My surgeon has his own bariatric product that he had me on. You can find it at Bariatric Diets and Nutrition - SmartForme
I only used the liquid product for the first 2 weeks. It isn't too bad. I also used the SF Carnation Instant Breakfast. I often put in 2 pouches of the Inst Breakfast into 8 oz of ff milk for a total of 18 grams of protein. You can also add dry milk like Corrine suggested.
Something else I still use a lot is the Fage 2% yogurt. I add in a packet of orange crystal light, a little Splenda and a dash of vanilla extract. It will give you 17 grams of protein. I've even made a smoothie with the Fage, Carnation Inst. Breakfast, Splenda, ff milk and Crystal light. It tasted great but it is quite a bit to drink early postop. It gave me 30 grams of protein.
Those 2 things were my big standbys besides the SmartForme product.

Definitely check out vitalady.com. She has many many different options and will sell you samples of whatever sounds interesting. I also like the New Whey vials. They're small...only 3.1 ounces for a whole tube, which contains 42 g of protein. I drink half at a time...no water mixing or anything, I just chug it back. So much better than those nasty milk based shakes that seem to be in a bottomless cup.
It's not awful, which is about the best compliment I'm ever gonna have for a protein supplement. I mean, I've slugged back tequila...how bad can a few ounces of orange protein drink be, right?
Another not awful one is Syntrax nectar. I just bought the Crystal Sky flavor...it's blue. I still haven't figured out why they named it after the sky...what, exactly, does the sky taste like? Anyhow, vitalady has many flavors and will sell you samples of all...

I think alot of people have this issue. I found some coffee flavored ones that have 20G of protien that I like pretty good.. but the powder is just awful. I am going to have to do something it just the smell of the whey that kills me ... I have some vials that are 25G a piece and I force those down if I have to .. but I add a little water to stop them from being soo syrupy. I have 2 days till stage three and I am so thankful. cause some of these supplements are really nasty......

I'm still pre-op, but I like the Fage 2% greek yogurt as well. If you like the 0% variety (I don't), it has even more protein...either 22 or 23 grams if memory serves me right. Be sure not to get the fruit or honey flavored Fage yogurt, it doesn't have the same protein value, plus it's high in sugar. Fage yogurt is a bit hard to find, I can get it at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Giant Eagle. Oikos also makes greek yogurt as well, which I found at Super WalMart.

I'd definitely try the ISOPURE, but in the pre-made bottles. We never could make the powder taste right in that brand. The bottled stuff tastes just like Kool-aid! We love the Alpine Punch flavor.
My wife also has hit uppon a combination she loves: Take one "Diet" or sugar free hot chocolate mix packet, add half a scoop of vanilla protein powder and half a scoop of chocolate, mix with water in a blender. THEN heat it up on the stove. The key is to NOT get it to boiling, otherwise it gets lumpy.
We use Jay Robb's protein that we get locally and is yummy. His site is JayRobb.com
Voila! Warm, yummy hot cocoa, with 25 grams of protein!
