My doctor said that I couldn't have pills for the first 2 months due to the healing/swelling of the pouch. Now I am able to take regular vitamins and supplements. Let me tell you they are huge pills! I feel like they are a mini-meal by themselves! I stopped taking the chewables and started up on tablet vitamins due to the fact that they discolored my teeth...

My doc told me to chew or crush all pills for the rest of my life.

It depends on the particular pill....some are time-released and can't be broken or crushed, because it will change the way you metabolize the pill. For example, my potassium pill is like this. Many anti-depressants are also time-released.

Your best bet is to ask your pharmacist.

I had to take chewable for the first 3 weeks. After that I could go to the regular pills. Some people have a hard time with the pills and prefer chewable but it isn't a must. On the other hand, if you are having problems with your labs you may want to go to liquid or chewable. You tend to absorb those more easily.

Like Sherry mentioned you will want to stay away from time released meds. There is a good chance those might go right on threw with minimal absorption.

I take the gummy vitamins. 2 doses per day. I really like them and they kinda make me feel like a kid when I eat them. I also take Caltrate (or something like that) for calcuim. Those taste like toned down sweet tarts. I've never been a candy person but it's something fun to have. I keep the gummies on my desk at work and my boss loves them. I think I'm going to buy him some of the winnie the pooh ones to keep at his desk!

The deal is simple...what can you get down? If you can take a pill...take it. If you can't it's chewables. Like Beth said though, you can't have time released, they just don't work well with our systems, so extended release, or any type of time based release of meds. is no good. Me...I take Centrum Preformance MV, and about 5 Calcium Citrate Petites a day. They are as large as I can do safely. The chewables are only until you can get something better in.... Most of the time, the kids types and other chewables don't have the nutritional requirements for an adult, so you have to take more. Just do what works for you and you and your Surgeon are comfortable with. (You might give the office a call and ask which they prefer you on and why. That will put you in the clear if they don't want you taking pills of that sort for whatever reason. Calls are simple and Free!)

i didnt know that either. Ok so next time i dont have to spend 22$ on a stupid "special" chewable multivitamin from my doc office? What MV do you recommend because he didnt want us taking ANY centrum because it's not absorbed well into GBS patients so um what else? and i'm sorry if i sound stupid too, but i'm not taking the horse size calcium i bought from him either so what are some exact names of ones i can take that are NOT large (i still have problems with pills even my smaller iron pill)
