When does it feel real?
I realize that I am recently post op, and am still drinking liquids, but when does this begin feel real? Besides the liquids, and the discomfort of the incisions, and the stupid pump coming out of my body, I just don't feel different. I am desperately trying to get in protein and liquids everyday. I think I average about 50 g of protein a day. 60-70 is definetly a goal, but not one that I have attained yet.
I feel hungry (although I am sure that this is head hunger as it only happens when my husband is eating something!), but I am scared to drink too much (what does that feel like?) I am a former gulper (and this is hard), I have to use a sippy cup or I take too much into my mouth.
How do you know if you have had too much liquids? I feel like I drink all day, and I am keeping track of everything. I have a feeling once I go back to work, the drink tracking will get more difficult. I am a teacher, and it is hard for me to sit and drink, while I have 75 13 year olds demanding attention. But sippy cup it will be for me.

Cari,
I think you're doing very well with your protein and fluid intake especially since you're only about one week out. I'm 5 1/2 weeks out and averaging 45-53g of protein daily and the most fluid I've been able to take in is 24oz. My nurse practitioner is happy with that for now. I drink all day but when I get more than a few ounces I start gurgling and have to wait. The time went fast for me and I'm slowly being introduced to new foods. Hang in there!

you're doing great with protein!
What I do regarding water is to make sure to finish at least 2 24oz bottles of water every day. I'm shooting for 3 but it gets tough.
Also, I'm about 7 weeks out and the water does get easier. I can't gulp - I think those days are over for me :-( but I can take about 3 swallows at a time. It gets easier!
Good luck to you! :-)

When I drink I get a bad gas type pain but it only last a short time. You will definetly no if you do it. I have always been a fast eater and a gulper so this to is hard for me. I must be doing good because The gas pain is the only problem I had so far and I am two months out. Right after surgery I had a real hard time with any drinks like the crystal light stuff. I got two cases of Isopure protien water (42 grams of protien) but could not get a sip down, it just tasted tooooo sweet. Today I tried it again and had no problem. It is a good way to get your protien and water in at the same time. It is expensive, but if you have a gold card from gnc and your order two cases you can get a good price and get delivery free. Eat slow and chew and sip sip sip.. Good luck

Good going!
Follow your instincts - each body is individual.
Get your breathing in shape, rest properly, and sip that water regularly! Then things will gradually fall into place for you, such as protein and becoming more selective in what you eat by necessity or choice - at 14 weeks out I feel I can easily "hide" my GBS and "behave" totally normal when going out!
Best wishes,
Vim

I am a teacher, too, and I dread trying to drink all day once I get back to school. I have already found it challenging to get in my doc's fluid intake goal (64 ounces). I figure I am hitting 40 or so and try to better each day.

It does get easier as you go on. You'll be fine, after all you are the teacher.

Thanks guys. I think I am good on the protein part, but the water part, I am struggling with. And...I am pretty sure I am headed for dehydration, so today and I writing EvERYTHING down, and then hopefully I will be able to get in at least 36 oz. My doc says aim for that this week, and then next week go up 10 oz.
Thanks for the advice about protein. I cannot stand the isopure liquids, I have tried them and I hate the aftertaste. I have some new whey vials that are sweet but don't have the aftertaste. My goal today is to get in 42 grams (1 vial) and maybe 40 oz water. Work my way up, that sound like the perfect way to go
