First Weeks Post Op Food questions
I had my RNY on the 11th so I'm newly started on this whole new food journey. I know everyone's pouch is different but I was curious how long it generally took people to be able to eat a little larger amounts. For example, currently I've been able to eat about an eighth of a cup of yogurt with powdered milk mixed in for protein for breakfast, an eighth of a cup of imitation crab with mayo for lunch and an eighth of a cup of tuna with mayo for dinner. And I've only been able to take in about 28 oz of water. I've been experimenting as I get further out trying to take bigger bites and see what I can tolerate. I know I should be getting in other components to my meals besides the protein like fruits and starches and I'm working on adding in milk as part of my liquid intake. How long did it take people here to be able to get past the protein component of your meals? I've been taking the 30 to 45 minutes to eat and will stop whenever I'm starting to feel that full feeling. I was just curious what other people experienced initially. Thanks for your feedback.

I had surgery on Valentine's Day and can only hold about 4oz. You're doing much better than I am with the water. My best is 24oz in one day and I'm sipping all day long. The past couple of weeks I've been using the Special K flavored protein supplement in my water. It's just an extra 5g but every bit helps. I've been taking in 45-53grams of protein daily and worried that wasn't enough but when I saw the nurse practitioner last week she was happy with that amount. I went back to work last week so have been drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added) with non-fat powdered milk on the way to work. I was just allowed to have fish last Thursday and have been enjoying tilapia (broil it with 1TBSP of parmesan cheese sprinkled on it), tuna salad, and imitation crab meat. Tonight I baked a small red potato to go with the fish and added LF cheese and FF sour cream to boost the protein content. If I have room in my tummy before I go to bed I'll try to eat some yogurt. I like the Weight Watchers yogurt. About my second week out I bought whey protein and tried it (unsuccessfully)and can't bring myself to try it again but know I will have to at some point. If there is a support group where you live I encourage you to attend. I've been to two of them and they were helpful. One I went to last week had sales reps with supplement samples for us to try. A nice way to see what you like. Good luck!

first 2 weeks I was lucky to get in 4oz at a time
Are you pureeing your food? Though I think if you had Lap, you may be able to eat a little bit better than the bypass folks. It sounds like you are doing great however!
Water is still a struggle for me. I don't know if I'll ever get in the recommended 64oz.
Here at 6 weeks out, I can hold about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup. I haven't tried to push it to the full cup yet, but I have a feeling I can get it in if I tried.

I had surgery on 3/4 and finally get to kiss liquids good-bye tomorrow.
I don't think I will ever get in 64 ounces of water either!

Post-OP
I had surgery on 12/27 and had my first meal of scrambled egg on 1/9/08. I was unable to eat the whole thing and lived off eggs and pasta sauce for weeks. Good luck. My advice to you is EAT SLOW, CUT FOOD SMALL AND MEASURE EVERYTHING.

I know everybody's programs that they are on from their surgeons are a little different. With my program, the first two weeks post op at least are strictly puree. So I have been pureeing mostly canned chicken, imitation crab, and tuna and adding fat free mayo. The next several weeks after (if tolerating puree) is a soft mash diet (anything you can mash with a fork) and then after you are tolerating that for several weeks you can go on to solid foods.
Tomorrow it will be exactly one week post-op (and to those who asked, yes, I did have the bypass and not lap band). I'm never really excited to eat or anything (as hunger is not present) but I find I feel so much better once I do or else I'm feeling nauseous. I have been able to eat about 1.5 oz the last two days at each meal of pureed canned stuff, so I'm guessing my protein intake has been around 25 to 30 grams if I'm lucky, depending on what I'm eating.
Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I know it is quite personal for everyone and I'm trying to add things in (like milk today which went okay, woo hoo!). I appreciate your suggestions for meals as well because I'm sure I will need some "spicing up" as things get past this puree stage.

I was on liquid for 4 weeks post op and mushies 2 weeks after that.
If you are having trouble getting in more protein in you, it probably would not hurt you going back into liquid and replace water with something with protein, that way you are shooting two birds with one shot, or however they say that
I had trouble even drinking water at first, but one thing the doctor told me, the first four weeks, concentrate on trying to get the fluid in you, you need the water, 24 ounces is just not enough, especially if you are starting to get active. You don't want to hurt your kidneys.

eating
I am 5 weeks out and my routine is a protein shake in the morning, drink water until 1130am a piece of meat(about 3 bites) for lunch around 12pm... water water water until dinner time and then i try to eat a heathly choice or lean cusine (approximately 1/3 of it focusing on meat 1st) I throw out alot .
My nutritionist told me that I should not "push it" and eat what my body allows...soft foods stay down alot better than others right now....and if I burp, I am to stop eating.... it means i'm full
I need more protein but right now this is the best I can do, my Dr. and nutritionist are aware of my intake and any changes in my health are being monitored closely. If your Doc is ok with your diet, by all means EAT
We are all different and if you dont feel like crap do it, but remember protein
is 1st and after eating protein if you still feel hungry have veggies
My problem is that Im not hungry...I have to force things down...
and because of that I sometimes eat too quickly! (puke-a-rama)
Also my portion size is funny, my 3yr old nephew was teasing me cause he can eat more than me! LOL what a change in 5 weeks
good luck with everything
Chris

i'm going to be harsh here. You MUST get at least the 64 oz of LIQUID a day. it doesnt have to be water, it can be crystal light, protein shakes, soup etc.. But if not you are running a great risk in a nice hospital stay (trust me been there at 3 weeks post op) and your not working your "tool" properly. You need the fluids in order to stay hydrayted but also to loose weight.
Darn it where is Jersey girl when I need her! Seriously you must drink that fluid and find a way to get it in. My surgeon says that it doesnt even matter if you dont eat for the day as long as you get those 64 oz in, you can get very sick not drinking and before you had this surgery you knew you'd be expected to get those 64oz in so come on you can do it
