Qs from a Newbie...
Okay, I am almost 5 weeks post op and just when I think I have things figured out, something weird happens and I am like "WHA...!!" So here are a couple of questions for those of you who have lived a little longer with your pouches:
1. What causes that tight, painful feeling in your chest besides overeating or not chewing. (Have experienced the feeling with the afore mentioned reasons but this morning, tried to eat some Carb Control Yogurt (strawberry flavor) and after three tiny bites, I got SICK - awful pain in my general pouch area - similar to when I have a bite too much or am not chewing enough - and eventually, nausea and vomitting. I have had the yogurt before with no problems, only thing different this time was that is was strawberry. What's the deal?)
2. With that said, will the foods my pouch can handle change over time?
3. I may be eating out for the first time this evening with hubby and friends - what is it like to eat out post-gbs?? I am a little nervous - not so much about the eating part but more about what the people we're eating with will think. How did you guys handle it?

I have had the same reaction with yogurt. While I can eat strawberry, the peach causes me discomfort. So maybe it is just the flavor. I guess it is different for everyone. Things I have eaten at 2 or 3 months post op have since made me sick and I no longer am able to eat. As far as eating out for me, I do good at red lobster, and most all restaurants has some sort of grilled chicken. Just ask them to prepare it your way. Most will oblige any request. The only place I have found that I have trouble eating at now is the olive garden. It is just not the same. Hope this helps.

Robin,
They have good broiled flounder, blackened tilapia, lobster (without butter). The last time we ate there, we just added the 1/2 pound of crab legs to my hubbys meal and that is what I ate. They ended up being the perfect amount for me now. And of course always broccoli or veggies. Their grilled chicken is good too. It is marinated in balsamic dressing, you get two huge breasts though. I can usually make about four meals off just them alone. Hope this helps. Have a good dinner tonight.

First off, remember this...you're pouch can do whatever it chooses, whenever it chooses! Follow that rule and all goes well!
1. What causes that tight, painful feeling in your chest besides overeating or not chewing. Your yoghurt could have been 1 degree off (either too warm or too cold) for your pouches rules THAT day. That's the lesson I'm learning too. My pouch HATES eggs and toast (even itty bitty samples) and doesn't allow home-made stir-fry for whatever reason. It's the pouches rules...we don't have to understand them...just obey!
2. With that said, will the foods my pouch can handle change over time? From my understanding...your pouch preferences can definitely change over time! That's the good news!!
3. I may be eating out for the first time this evening with hubby and friends - what is it like to eat out post-gbs?? I am a little nervous - not so much about the eating part but more about what the people we're eating with will think. How did you guys handle it? You're braver than I am!! I do not try anything new until I've tried it at home!! I'd hate to get that "Oh, please just vomit and get this over with dry-heaving" feeling.
I know I'm not much help, but I am sarcastic...and that's a good thing, right??

Thanks and Update
Hi All, Thanks for your replies to my questions. I think I figured out that my morning bouts of nausea are because of my head cold/sinus drainage. I didn't mention that I had a cold b/c I didn't think it was relevant. But, I continued to get sick in the am (after eating things I have eat before and been fine with) for the next two days. I think it's because of the cold. I can't think of any other reason for it. Anyone else experienced this with a cold? Past mid-morning, I have been fine. It's weird. This morning, I just skipped breakfast all together and have been sipping on a protein drink since about 10:30 and have been fine.
And, we did go out to eat on Friday night - it was horrible. My husband and I "shared" the broiled seafood platter. I ate a few bites of broiled flounder, one shrimp...and was terribly sick for the next hour. We had to pull over twice on the way home. Once I got it all out, I was fine. I think the fish was too dry. Learned a lesson. Not sure what I'll have next time we eat out - but it definitely will not be the broiled fish.

This was one of my concerns pre-op, but I found out my fears were nothing to be concerned of. Interestingly enough, the meals I chose and the time I took to eat them, made an impression on those that I dined with. I think we affect others more than they affect us with this surgery and they can't help but realize that the way we now eat is the correct way. I have several people openly comment on this and now when I eat out with them, they are eating much lighter and more protein rich.
