How long should we eat?
I have been doing good on eating food and not feeling sick, but now my question is how long should I spend eating before I push my plate away. The doctor's office gave me a booklet and it said to stop after 45 mins, but that seems like a long time. It used to take me that long right out of surgery but now 7 weeks later it seems like I would be getting to much food in if I took 45 mins to eat. I'm doing 30 mins now but even then sometimes it seems like I had to much but I don't feel sick, and I measure my food but I still feel like maybe i'm over doing it even though I only average about 850 cals a day.
Thanks,
Blay

My doc tells me I should finish in 30 minutes. I have always been a quick eater, so this is something I have really struggled with. I have slowed down considerably but still probably eat faster than I should. Usually 20 minutes is about as long and I can stretch it.

In the first weeks you just kind of eat what you can since you can't eat much anyway. Once you are able to eat more the general rule seems to be that you want to have your meal finished in 15-20 minutes.

I kind of nibble at it for about 30 minutes
Eventually it gets cold and I just get tired of eating it. It sucks. :-/
My doctor never gave me a time to finish it. Just told me to be sure to measure everything and never go over, so as not to stretch my pouch.

Blay...they say 30-60 minutes. But to me that's IMPOSSIBLE! I usually finish on average 20-25 minutes. It really depends on what foods I eat...soft foods go down really quick, heavier proteins (chicken, hamburger) slows me down.

Trust me UuUuLaLa...your pouchie will give you a DEFINITE signal when its full! Yikes! Everyone's "full signal" is different...mine give me a PAIN between the shoulder blades followed by a "oh, please...let me vomit...I won't do it again" feeling! I've not gotten physically ill...yet....but I don't push it! With soft foods they tend to leave you feeling hungry sooner.

15-20 minutes for me
My surgeon sets a 15-20 minute limit for meals, regardless of the type of WLS (I had a Gastric Sleeve or VSG). The "Owner's Manual" his program gives each patient sets out that after 20 minutes, we're supposed to stop eating, and if there's food left, we're not permitted to eat it later - we're supposed to throw it out.
I'm seeing a definite difference in how long it takes me to eat low fat cottage cheese (20 minutes for 2 oz., chewing each bite into liquid consistency) compared to Dannon Light & Fit yogurt (can eat a whole container - 60 calories - in about 10 minutes, using a small baby spoon and setting the spoon down between bites). I've also gotten faster at gettting down my twice-daily Worldwide Pure Protein protein shakes - when I started a week ago, it took 20 minutes to sip an 11 oz. shake; now I can finish one in 5 minutes or so...
