Has anyone here been told they are suffering from Malnutrition after RYN.

Judy, basicly any time you are eating only like 250-300 calories a day you will probably be malnourshed. Your body can't survive on those kind of numbers too long it will go into starvation mode.

In what context did your doctor say that to you? Was he/she concerned? If it was in regards to a slow down in your weight loss or a stall it could be due to not getting enough nourishment. You go into starvation mode and your body panics and hangs on to every bit of nourishment it can...what happens is usually your weight loss slows or stops.

So how are you eating? Are you getting in your protein? If so how much?

Yes, it does get better but there is a HUGE learning curve for all of us. It takes awhile to get to know this new pouch of ours and what it will tolerate. Sometimes you do have to get brave and push it a little. Sometimes it backfires and you have to back off to the food you know is "safe"....it happens but then you back off for a few weeks and try again. It will come, just be patient with yourself and don't let that little pouch of yours scare you too much.

Thanks Beth for your help..
I am not pushing my tum tum to hard.
The learning curve is big.. I am learning slowly..
I don't want to gain weight but I believe I am
in starvation mode just by accident. Do you all
eat every couple of hours. I have a hard enough
time just drinking the right amount of water..
Thanks Beth. The Dr. was concerned a bit but just
told me to up my food intake.. Than I should be just fine.

Um...Beth is right, though I am confused. Malnutrition is part and parcel for this surgery. It's the early days out when your only 5 weeks post op. Your still on a HUGE learning curve and just now getting solids in. Those days I think getting 500 calories in a day was a chore. Don't worry yourself over going into starvation mode, it happens, it's supposed to. Your weight loss levels out, and stops being so drastic, your body adjusts and whammy your over the 'honeymoon' phase. Best of luck...

Default I am about where you are, post op wise

I had a very hard time moving over to solids, but with this tiny pouch, you are not in any danger of gaining unless you eat the wrong things or you eat 24 hours a day! I'm assuming you can't eat that often!

The water has been hard for me to master as well. I used to guzzle the stuff but now I fall short almost every day. Just be SURE to get your protein and vitamins in. That is so important and keep trying new things.

Last night I had refried beans with salsa - let me tell you! The best thing I've eaten since this surgery! But I've had a lot of misses too. Some things just don't work with my pouch.

Good luck!
