Default Food: How do you know...

... if you're eating too much, or too fast?

What sort of sensation do you get? Pain, pressure, cramps, gagging???

I'm just now realizing that this is NOT the piece of cake I thought it was... and am having some struggles now around the "F" words: food, fatigue and frequent bathroom RUNS

Katie, fun stuff, isn't it? I stuck to weighing everything or using a measuring cup consistently for the first couple of months, just to get familiar with how my stomach would feel at certain points. After awhile, you get the idea of what the new fullness feels like.

For me, pressure was the indicator.

Katie,

When I eat to fast or too much I get a pain in my upper chest. I also have this feeling in my pouch I cant really explain it but I know its not happy. If I rest for about 30 min. it will pass. I also get this if I drink to much to fast.

Katie~

Early out~ I was on liquids , I used the one ounce little cup they gave me.I measured out the soup & broth.I never had any issues, no pain or pressure.Six or seven small meals a day.

One year out or so~ I was still on 90% liquids and smushies...didn't measure anymore but just waited for the smallest feeling of pressure.Six or seven small meals a day.

Two years out and current status~ *60% liquids & smushies*I feel the pressure and I stop as soon as I feel it.I have even spit food out mid chewing when the feeling hits.

At all times, If I eat too fast, the tightness hits hard and I will vomit.I don't have the lifestyle to go "rest it out" but that works.I have to get it out right away and I feel awesome with in seconds.

Katie~ You will know your body , like no other time in your life.

We all have different "feelings" but TRUST me you will know.

PS~ No potty issues here, I do pee a lot but I drink A LOT

Katie,

From day one up until today, I have the same reaction when eating: First it's a gurgle down there...then the hiccups. If I try to push it even a little more, I get nausea followed by a sharp pain in my abdomen, which will subside in 1/2 an hour or so, but still. Once I get to hiccups, I stop! I know what's coming and it's NOT comfortable!

I also used the one ounce cups for the first few days, after that, I started marking my glass mug and water bottles so that I would know how many ounces were in stuff.

Also, an aside: 11 pounds already! You go, ToonyBear!

-Mike

For me, I almost immediately start feeling uncomfortable like I need to get whatever it is out. Admittedly, when very uncomfortable, I've made myself gag so I could throw up on a few occasions. The first thing that made me do it was a 1/4 of a ground turkey patty.

Oddly, I'm like Mike...I get hiccups when I can't eat a single thing more. IF I do, I will get sick. It's actually a running joke at the dinner table, because my son, who is 5 always says when he hears me Hiccup..."Mom, your done...Can I have it????" (He's a growin' boy!!) LOL!! I also find myself pausing a LOT right before I was done. It takes time, but eventually you will LEARN what these signs are and your brain and pouch will sync back up. It's not something that a lot of Mo's are familiar with...that FULL feeling...and it's a little different than the full we had prior to WLS. Not sure if that helps ya out, or muddles it up more! LOL!!

Katie, at your stage, when I ate one spoonful too much, I got sick to my stomach and usually threw it up. I learned to listen carefully to my pouch and knew when it was full. It took months for that to stop, but I still listen to my pouch.

If I ate too fast, I get too full too fast, and then the above happens.

No pain, some pressure, nausea.

It took about 8 months for that to quit, in degrees. Although even now if I eat too fast, I get full really fast. If I eat too much, I feel uncomfortable (too full), and walk around a lot.

What I fear most is not pushing my pouch to expand too much so that it won't work. So I try to be diligent.

I realize now that this is not going to be automatic - I have to really think about what I eat, and when I eat it, to stay the size I am now - and to continue to feel healthy and vital at almost 68.

HUGS!

Katie - I still measure my food cause my warning signs weren't/aren't so obvious and if I pushed it too much I didn't know until it was too late.

For me it was just an incredibly uncomfortable feeling in what I'm assuming is my pouch. And that went on for almost an hour.
