Default Trip to the ER

Yesterday I was just fed up with the mid back pain. I couldn't sit in any position without being in pain. I called my surgeon to ask if this could be related to the surgery and what I could do about it. After the nurse and doc talked they called me back and said head to the hospital it could be a blood clot. They said the pains in that area of the back are not typical and wanted me checked out.

Off to the ER I went. They ended up doing chest xrays, blood, urine and everything came back normal. They ended up saying it was muscular which I thought from the beginning. So back to pain meds and muscle relaxer (flexeril). The ER doc said it was safe to take. I will fill my prescription at lunch and wanted to be sure it was safe to take. Anyone know?

Sorry to hear you're in pain I hope it's nothing serious. I don't know the pills, but if it's indeed muscle pain then maybe you could try the following: lay down on a bed, take all the pillows from underneath your head and put them under your knees (it should be knees, not feet), so the knees are bent even when you relax your body. You shouldn't have any pillows under your head. In this position all the pressure on your backbone and the muscles in your back is minimized. You can try to sleep that way for a night or two. It works like a charm for me and I hope it can help you as well

Sissi I will try that out. Its funny I never had back pain until the surgery and now I can't sit for a 10 minute car ride. I called this morning and talked with the nurse and she said I should be able to take the med. She said she would triple check for me . The er doc said to do stretches but I don't think that is a good idea yet. My left side is still healing and it is pretty painful if I stretch to far yet.

Nextbigloser, one more thing popped to my mind - maybe it's some kind of neuralgia? I've read somewhere that in some cases it may happen to post-RNY patients.

Hi Kim, glad the doctors didn't find anything serious. I often hear that people complain of back pain after their wls but good thing you called and had it checked out. It is always smarter not to assume that the pain is nothing serious.

In regards to the Flexeril it should be fine to take. It isn't an NSAIDs and it isn't a time released drug. Hope you start to feel better soon. Welcome to the loser's side of this journey.

Make sure you are going to couch or bed after taking the flexeril. It will probably knock you on your butt. It is great for muscle spasms. I've taken it, even post op, and it worked great. Valium works better if the flexeril doesn't work for you. Feel better soon.

I didn't have back pain from my GBS surgery - but reading your post brough me back to a really bad knee surgery that I had - I shattered my knee cap and tore my quadracep in a fall and was in the hospital (intraction) for a week - when I got out - I was in an immobilizer from my waist down to my ankle on my right side - The crutches were awkward b/c my leg was so straight. I ended up having to use my right obliques (the stomach muscles on the side of your waist) to lift the dead leg up over things - after a few days - I had back spasms. My doctor said it wasn't related to my injury, but to my recovery - I was moving in such a different way that certain muscles were being fatigued to the point of spasm! With your back muscles directly relating to your stomach muscles, it makes sense that you may have pain simply do to your recovery.

I teach kickboxing now - and I constantly tell my students to keep your stomach muscles tight, or else you may hurt your back. That's what they train us to say . . . so it must be true

Hope you are feeling better.

Sorry about the pain. Glad to hear it isn't a blood clot!
