Smile hello

I am 4 days out post op. I had my surgery on Dec. 17, 2007 at Tufts New England Medical Center. The problem I am having is not getting in enough fluids or protein. I seem to have gas and acid reflux problems as well. When i start sipping my fluids, I get the burpies going and I stop because I am too scared to go on. When my pouch calms down, I attempt it again and back again, I get the burpies. So, I stop myself from continuing and feel bad that I didn't get my recommended 64 ounces of fluids a day or my protein intake. I am passing gas, burping and even had my first bowel movement today but I still feel like crap. I am taking zantac, pepsid and my pain meds. I also walk around the house to get my body moving. I've also resorted to taking lactaid with my protein. But, last night, I puked and so I am back to trying water and chicken broth. It has been very uncomfortable and miserable for me. Does anyone have advice?

Thanks

Carla

I'm sorry to say their is a reason they call it hell week, walk and sip, just do the fluids the best you can, use the pain meds. stay ahead of the pain, taking the meds. after you start hurting just makes it harder.

Take it slow. Being only four days out your going to struggle getting stuff in. You don't need to rush it. I never got all my fluids in at first either and there are days I still don't. Protein lets not go there. (I struggle to this day with it.) Just do what you can. Even if it requires your husband waking you up every hour to give you a sip of water. ( mine did that before we knew it was a stricture) Good Luck Hon and it does get better.

You need to just go slowly. You will have a hard time getting the 64 oz of liquid in. I still have a tough time with that at almost 2 months out. Do what you can, you are still very early out. Walk, sip and rest, that is the main focus for now. Don't beat yourself up if you can't get in the 64 oz.

It a rough few weeks. I never did get in all my protein or water for some time...its not the way I would choose, but its a full time job for a while just getting aquainted with your new way of life. Hang in there and do what you can!

Default Thank you

Thank you all for your well wishes and advice. I am feeling better today. I spoke to my doctor who told me to take it much slower when doing liquids even if i have to sip all day long. I also started doing ginger tea and that has helped tremondously. I look forward to not having gas or burpies on a regular basis.
