Kimberly, I suspect a topical would be fine.
Some people have to take NSAIDs for a medical reason, ASA for people at a risk for a heart attack is one such case. Sometimes you just can't get around it. You have to weigh the down side of living with or without the NSAIDs. IF it is recommended that you take NSAIDs for a medical reason you MUST be on a protectant. My surgeon recommends Citotec as his protectant of choice. You do still run the risk of developing ulcers but the protectant will help decrease that risk. Like I said, you have to weigh the risk with quality of life.
