Jeri, I have to agree with the others. That 800 calories is a goal. Yes, you do need to increase your calories in order to get your weight to start coming off more but it won't happen in one day. You are still early post-op and if except for the protein shakes you are only taking clear liquids there is no way you will get in 800 calories. You could add some dry milk into those protein shakes which would give you a few more calories. Otherwise those bariatric products on www.smartforme.com are what I used for 2 weeks post-op. Several of the soups and the fruit drinks would fall under the clear liquid diet.

http://www.smartforme.com/index.asp?...WPROD&ProdID=8

Any of the flavors are great! I liked them so much I still use them. The grape tastes just like welch's grape juice. Any of these would add in 70 calories and 15 grams of protein.

http://www.smartforme.com/index.asp?...PROD&ProdID=15

Of these the only one I wasn't allowed the first 2 weeks post-op was the chicken noodle because it does have some noodles in it. I liked all of these except the tomato. I just couldn't stomach that one at all. On the other hand my friend loved it, so it is certainly a matter of taste. These will give you 80 calories and 15 grams of protein.

http://www.smartforme.com/index.asp?...WPROD&ProdID=9

These hot drinks are also very good but there is a trick to making them so the protein doesn't "cook" into clumps. You need to first add some room temp tap water, just enough to make a paste and then add the warm-hot water stirring the whole time. You want to make sure that the water isn't too hot or it will clump and doesn't taste the best. These are 80 calories and 12 grams of protein.

I know these are pretty expensive but I do highly recommend them. I'm not sure if it would be any cheaper for me to buy you some and ship them. The cost for me to buy them is $8/box for the soup, fruit drinks or hot drinks. That gives you 7 servings. That would be $8 vs $13.49 for any of them. I'm not sure how much shipping would be but I think it would be cheaper than the website shipping depending on how much I ship. The website charges $6 shipping for an order under $40. If you are interested let me know. I'm willing to do that for you.

Just for comparison though, I was required to get in 4 of these products per day for the first 2 weeks post-op. That gave me about 320-350 calories a day depending on which product I had. With the sugar free popsicles I probably didn't get much more that 400 calories a day if even that. So as everyone said, don't panic too much about that number 800 calories. Once you can start adding in soft foods then you can more realisticly look at getting in that amount of calories.

I think I mentioned in another post, but I'll mention it again here.

I didn't have much luck writing stuff down and keeping track of calories at all until I started using Fitday.com. There, it's just point and click and I can keep up with activities and vitamins and stuff too. It just made things more convenient.

Later Tater,

-Mike

I don't see how you could possibly get in 800 calories a day at this point. I'm lucky if I'm getting in 250-300 calories a day and I'm on full liquid. Most of my calories are coming from the protein because, as you know, there aren't many calories in the liquid form. I would just focus on getting in enough fluids to keep from dehydrating, not worry about the calories.

Default Differences in doctors?

So, each surgeon or bariatic program must be very different huh? The two surgeons performing the surgery here have the same requirements. I was on clear liquid the day after surgery, full liquid the 2nd day and I am now on pureed foods - I was required to buy TrePuree (a Campbell's product) pre-op. So, today I ate the TrePuree, yogurt, protein drinks and water. I've not having any trouble. In fact, I have more trouble with the liquid than I do with the pureed food.

Anybody else have this type of diet after surgery??
