Default Back after being in and out of the hospital

Well boy did I have some troubles. In Feb. I wasn't able to keep anything down not water or anything. This went on for 3 weeks while my surgeon sent me for different tests. I was sent for 2 barium swallows which showed that I didn't have any blockage. I was then admitted back to the hospital and was told I would have to get scoped. Well that wasn't too bad. They went down my throat with a scope and a balloon and I guess made more room where my anastamosis(sp) was. I was feeling better but the day I got discharged from the hospital I got numbness in my legs. I still have this. It's been about 3-4 weeks I have had this numbness and I thought it was because when I was so sick vomiting all the time I was in bed a good 22 hours out of the day so I thought it was just my muscles. Well I still have numbness in my legs and now my feet are swollen. I went to the doctors and she said she's not sure what's causing this and ran labs and everything came back normal. She said she was sure I didn't have a stroke or a blood clot so she perscribed me a steroid and some physical therapy. I was reading someone elses post about numbness in the hands and some people said that this was because of vitamin deficiency. Well I haven't been able to take my vitamins for quite some time and I was wondering if maybe this could be the cause now. Please any advise would be great. Thank you so much in advance

p/s/ I'm down 50 pounds (probably mostly muscle though)

Unhappy Oh, Nicole!

You poor thing! That's not fun at all. I'm so sorry you've had such a difficult time. It sounds like your doctor is trying to help as much as possible. However, I would DEFINITELY ask your doctor about a vitamin deficiency. It is the most common side effect of WLS and it can most certainly cause numbness. You're correct that some of our posters are having the same issues with numbness. Please don't let your symptoms continue without addressing the vitamin deficiency question! Take care of yourself, friend. I hope you're feeling lots better really soon.

Thank you so much for the support. I wonder if it is a vitamin deficiency if I just start taking my vitamins again will I gradually get feeling back in my legs? About 2 weeks ago I was standing up of course holding onto a wall because I constantly feel like I'm going to fall my dog jumped up on me and literally knocked me down on the floor, mind you my dog weights 10 pounds. I really just thought the numbness was from being in bed for 3 weeks. I will start taking my vitamins again right away and still mention it to my doctor. Thanks again Dara. Your so sweet.

Default Nicole,

God Speed on finding out what is causing your numbness in your legs. Like Dara said, check for vitamin deficiency.

Default Numbness

I had a B1 Definciency.. had I caught it in time or was able to go to the Dr. or have my labs drawn I would have known this. I now more than likely have irreversable nerve damage in my legs. It wouldn't hurt you to start taking B1 as well as your normal vitamins until you can have your levels checked. My Neurologist feels as if they should automatically put you on B1 after surgery as he has had many people with the same problems walk through his practice.

Good luck to you and don't ignore this please.. have a B1 drawn as soon as possible.
