Question Is your doc Experienced with GPS patients?

Just wondering how many of your PCP's are familier with us, as being patients. I asked mine when i was in last if he had any patients who have had this surgery. He said NO, that he has some that are like me waiting, or some who are thinking about it. One of the other doc in the office where he is has 2.
How important is it that i go to a PCP who is already dealing with people like us? Should i switch doc's after surgery? I dont want him to miss something just cuz is in not knowledgable.
What is your opinion?

My PCP hadn't refered anyone in the past for GBS, I was his first. Let me just say this, he's really old.

Thumbs up My Doctor

My Doctor has had a few gastric bypass patients and has followed their progress. He is fully aware of what my needs are and what I can or cannot tollerate. He actually called me the night before my surgery to wish me well. He's one heck of a man!! I'd say he is the best Internal Medicine Doctor on Earth..

My PCP has several WLS patients. He referred me and I hadn't seen him until I had lost 111 lbs. He was thrilled! He reminded me to follow the rules, make healthy choices. He's also very religious and said that he believes that although it's a drastic surgery and he doesn't really "like" it, he believes that God has given us the knowledge and technology to improve the lives of people and if this is how it can be done, then that's great. He also believes the the ultimate responsibility lies within ourselves, to follow the rules and not fall back into old, unhealthy habits.

My PCP was against me having the surgery. He insisted that diet and exercise was all that one needs. I had to go around him with my endocrinologist recommending the surgery. It was very difficult, but possible. Whenever I go to my PCP now, he sends me back to Dr. Callery because he just isn't familiar with GBS and doesn't want to do anything to harm me.
